Alex Wagner is back to speak with a former guest in Hungary about lessons Americans might take from the election defeat of Viktor Orbán that shocked the world.
On the last episode of Trumpland, the team travelled to Budapest to try and learn why Donald Trump and American conservatives were so fixated on authoritarian leader Viktor Orbán’s style of “illiberal democracy” as a possible blueprint for governance in the US. Wagner talked to Hungarians about how Orban had been so successful in consolidating power, how it had impacted everyday people, and what lessons Americans might learn about those who had been spent years resisting.
Given Orban’s monumental election defeat, we came back for a special bonus episode to speak with some of the Hungarians we met last year about what life has been like since election day and what comparisons might be made to political life right here in the US. Alex speaks with Hungarian MP Márton Tompos, who had previously led the opposition Momentum Party.
