      Part 1 - F1

In the inaugural episode of The Motorsport Files, hosts Drew Bentham and Garry Phillips dive into the latest developments in Formula 1. They discuss significant changes in car regulations for the upcoming season, including alterations to the powertrain, active aerodynamics, and the introduction of a boost button for drivers. The conversation highlights the implications of these changes on race dynamics and team strategies, as well as the excitement surrounding new teams like Audi and Cadillac entering the grid. The hosts also touch on the challenges faced by drivers in adapting to these innovations and the potential impact on race outcomes.

As the episode progresses, Drew and Garry explore the implications of the new regulations on team performance, particularly for newcomers like Cadillac, and reflect on the driver lineups. They express their thoughts on the competitive landscape of the season, including the performance expectations for established teams and the potential for surprises. The discussion wraps up with a light-hearted take on the aesthetics of car liveries and the importance of visibility for fans, emphasizing the balance between performance and presentation in the world of motorsport.

      Part 2 - WRC

In part 2, Drew Bentham and Garry delve into the upcoming WRC season, discussing the implications of new regulations and the driver lineups. They express concerns about the competitiveness of the season, particularly focusing on Toyota's dominance and Sébastien Ogier's potential to secure his tenth championship title. The conversation shifts to the performance of other teams, including M-Sport and Hyundai, and the challenges they face in keeping up with Toyota's resources and driver talent. The hosts also touch on the excitement surrounding new signings, such as Oliver Solberg, and the impact of the multi-driver setup for Hyundai. As they explore the future of rallying, they emphasize the need for more engaging competition and the importance of attracting new fans to the sport.

Part 3 - Interview with Steve Rider, Sports Commentator

Drew Bentham interviews Steve Rider, a legendary sports TV broadcaster with a remarkable 48-year career. Rider shares his journey in motorsport broadcasting, starting from his early days at the BBC in 1985 and his collaboration with Barry Hinchcliffe during the ITV years. He discusses the evolution of rally coverage, particularly the Mobile 1 Rally Challenge, which aimed to enhance viewer engagement by providing in-depth insights into rallying driving techniques and driver performances. Rider emphasizes the challenges faced in rally coverage during the late 80s, including the need for innovative technology and the support from the BBC to create a compelling viewing experience.

The conversation delves into the technical aspects of rally coverage, including the use of onboard cameras and the importance of capturing every moment of a rally stage. Rider reflects on the personalities involved in the sport and how the Mobile 1 Rally Challenge set a precedent for modern rally coverage. He also discusses the eventual decline of the show and the shift in focus towards circuit racing, while expressing hope for the future of rallying and the potential for a revival of similar programming to engage new audiences.

    • Driver Profile - Eamonn Kelly
      Jul 24 2023
2019 Irish National Champion, 2022 JBRC Champion and current JWRC driver Eamonn Kelly talks about his life in rallying.

He may only be 24, but already Eamonn has made some decent progress and made a name for himself both at home and on the world stage. Joined by his regular co-driver, Conor Mohan, the pair have already scored their first JWRC win recently in Croatia and they're only 7 months into a 2 year assault on the championship. This week on the show, I was lucky enough to be able to sit down and chat with him about his life in Rallying, his background and plans for the near future.
