A dramatic fire earlier this week destroyed a century-old industrial building at the foot of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge. A structure that may not have been famous, but played a surprisingly important role in Montreal’s history. The former Familex factory wasn’t just an old abandoned building, it’s the reason the Jacques-Cartier Bridge has that distinctive curve. Dinu Bumbaru, director of policy at Héritage Montréal and one of the city’s leading experts on built heritage, spoke to Andrew Carter about the building.
