Description

The stunning conclusion to Robin Hobb's Fitz and the Fool trilogy, which began with Fool's Assassin and Fool's Quest.

More than 20 years ago, the first epic fantasy novel featuring FitzChivalry Farseer and his mysterious, often maddening friend the Fool struck like a bolt of brilliant lightning. Now New York Times best-selling author Robin Hobb brings to a momentous close the third trilogy featuring these beloved characters in a novel of unsurpassed artistry that is sure to endure as one of the great masterworks of the genre.

Fitz's young daughter, Bee, has been kidnapped by the Servants, a secret society whose members not only dream of possible futures but use their prophecies to add to their wealth and influence. Bee plays a crucial part in these dreams - but just what part remains uncertain.

As Bee is dragged by her sadistic captors across half the world, Fitz and the Fool, believing her dead, embark on a mission of revenge that will take them to the distant island where the Servants reside - a place the Fool once called home and later called prison. It was a hell the Fool escaped, maimed and blinded, swearing never to return.

For all his injuries, however, the Fool is not as helpless as he seems. He is a dreamer, too, able to shape the future. And though Fitz is no longer the peerless assassin of his youth, he remains a man to be reckoned with - deadly with blades and poison and adept in Farseer magic. And their goal is simple: to make sure not a single Servant survives their scourge.

enfin une fin...

un peu déçu par l'histoire elle même, pas mal d'incohérences par rapport aux précédents livres de la Saga. malgré tout un plaisir à écouter !

Fantastic finish to an epic adventure...loved it

Robin Hobb , you have out done yourself. It was a non-stop emotional rollercoaster right down to the ending. Thank you for such a for sharing this tale with us. I enjoyed all of your books but Assassin's Fate takes the trophy. I would say why but I don't want to give away the plot points. READ these Books!

Heart wrenching

This was lovely pain. I listened at 2.0 double speed in helpless suspense and anxiety. I will never forget these characters and this world. Thank you Robin for making me laugh, rage, cry and care so much that it hurt. A satisfying unforseen end to a great series.

Fool's voice

I have read all the books by Robin Hobbs throughout the years but in paperbacks and e-book.This is the first time I tried this series on audio. Currently I am on chapter 7 and I am struggling to go on listening.
Fool's voice is very different from what he had sounded in my head when I'm reading the past books. The narrator made him sound like a wheezy, old man. He was like on the verge of death every time he speak. It was so hard to listen to him and it distracts me from fully enjoying the book. The other character's voices are good and I understand that they need to have different voices to distinguish who's who. But why, oh why does the Fool have the ugliest voice?? (cries)
Still, I'll hold out for a little longer and see if I will get used to it. Maybe I'll buy the physical book if I cannot stand his voice anymore.

A funeral to end a master piece.

There are few things that stirred such emotion as this series and more specifically this recording. There few words to convey such deep and unabating grief I felt towards the end. It was like losing a friend. Robin Hobb has once again outdone herself. The characters and their development during the book all culminated this glorious conclusion. Elliot Hill should feel proud of his rendering of the final book of this series. He brought alive the words as written while maintaining the emotions imparted therein. So long Fitz, Nighteyes, and The Fool; happy hunting.

Slow, but a solid conclusion

If you could sum up Assassin's Fate in three words, what would they be?

Inevitable, engaging, and emotional.

What did you like best about this story?

This is a tough story to get through, largely because of the constant turmoil of favorite characters. However, if you have read many of Hobb's books, this is something to be expected. She wraps up many story lines in this book, not just Fitz & the Fool.

What didn’t you like about Elliot Hill’s performance?

For the narrative parts of the book, Elliot Hills performance is decent enough. His pace and voice are both soothing and pleasant. However, his female voices are intensely annoying. He just doesn't have the knack it. It's unfortunate because there are several major female characters, and its' rough listening to it.

Disappointed in finish, gratuitous violence abounds

While the wrap up of the story didn't necessarily take a bad turn, I was disappointed in a couple of things. I'll be vague, so as not to give anything away.

I was sad that our main character who we have spent so much time with and come to know never seemed to get out of his obvious depression and find joy in life. He lived a defeated, struggle of a life and I don't feel that he ever found redemption or joy. Others may disagree, but after listening to all 9 books in a row, that is my feeling.

This book is VIOLENT. Graphic descriptions of child abuse and adult abuse permeate this book. We get it -- people were horrible. The constant recounting of evil, horrific abuse became gratuitous and grating. I would have skipped many sections if this book of I hadn't been listening to the audio version.

Overall, I feel let down and somewhat abandoned by this final volume. I don't think the characters were true to the spirit in which they were developed earlier. It's a dark end to what was an enjoyable story arc. It's too bad -- I was hoping to have a series I could enjoy again and again.

Great book. Better read.

Would you listen to Assassin's Fate again? Why?

Not likely. Most Hobb's books I have listened to multiple times. I just can't stand the voice used for the for the Fool or Amber. I find myself wincing and it distracts me from the story. Will read again.. Already have to be honest.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love all the characters in the book. Loved revisiting old friends.

What three words best describe Elliot Hill’s performance?

Overall performance is fine. Just voice does not match my mind's view of some of my favorite characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The ending I Listened to because could not read through the tears. Without spoilers not safe to drive vehicle while listening to last 3 hours.

Any additional comments?

Not sorry I bought the audible book. Love Robin Hobb, but glad I held off buying the first two audible books in this trilogy set. Have all three in Hardback and ebooks. When I revisit them won't be tempted to listen but will curl up with the physical books.

Annoying. Did just make it passt 50%, returning.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I have listened to all the other Farseer and thawnyman books, the were enjoyable although the shared the same negatives, but to a lesser degree.

It really bugs me when characters act contrary to their disposition, e.g Fitz should, because of his upbringing and training be able to spot a lot of the problems leading up to this book.

All the characters feel they are mistreated by the other characters.

I don't recall anyone feeling the were treated well....Most often the story is propelled because some character withelld information from their comrades.
Sometimes they just keep secrets for the sake of messing things up, it seems.
One would think that people such as Fitz and the Fool, having done so much of this thing in the past, would be able to mount the kind of operation they are undertaking and perhaps have the sense to actually talk with each other from time to time and perhaps make plans instead of moping around half the time.

What could Robin Hobb have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Shortened it.
It's a long way with not much to show

If Fitz and friends has a discussion in one location, they will have the exact same discussion two chapters hence in another location and so on.

Would you be willing to try another one of Elliot Hill’s performances?

Probably.
Most of my issues with the narration is that the voices has been set in my mind by other narrators all ready. Perhaps I would have gone with other accents.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

It sure got me thinking on doing other things than listening to it.

Any additional comments?

No

Wow, what a journey

It is with a heavy heart and tearing eyes that I thank you so very much for sharing such a wonderful and moving story. All 6 of the books that are defined as the fitz & the fool trilogy's have touched and inspired me, but that being said has left me with an overwhelming feeling of loss knowing that their tale is over and for that I will always regret. I have never looked forward more to something as I have to reading and listening to your telling of that story and with as much thanks for allowing us the privilege to share your tale but also to offer my deepest condolences for any loss you may feel. I can only imagine, knowing how I feel to guess at you feel to have had and finished such a literary journey. Thank you

Sincerely,

Shane Langham

Longer than it needed to be

I was a big fan of the original trilogy, but less so of the second, and even less so of the third. This particular book is much longer than it needs to be. There was so much detail and description that did not add to the story at all. I think this is the first time I've ever used the skip-ahead button on one of Fitz's books.

I've never been a fan of Bee. I just do not like the character. She is a bit better in this book, but I did find that most of my skips were during her chapters. Much of the book seemed like filler until the very end. The end is really the only part I listened to with anything more than passing interest.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS:
The result of the ending was good, however HOW it happened wasn't well done (in my opinion of course). With everything that he went through and survived, and all the magic available, I find it unlikely that he couldn't be saved.

The ending is kind of abrupt too. No epilogue....nada. Another reviewer postulated that it may be so that Bee can have her own series after this. I would not be bothering with that if it did happen.

If you've read/listened to all the previous books w/ Fitz, then you absolutely need to read/listen to this one to see how it all ends. Just don't be expecting as good a story as the previous ones.
