Description
For centuries, the people of Alera have relied on the power of the furies to protect them from outside invaders. But the gravest threat might be closer than they think.
Tavi has escaped the Calderon Valley and the mysterious attack of the Marat on his homeland. When the attack comes it's on two fronts. A sudden strike threatens the First Lord's life and threatens to plunge the land into civil war. While in the Calderon Valley, the threat faced from the Marat is dwarfed by an ancient menace. And Tavi must learn to harness the furies if he has any chance of fighting the greatest threat Alera has ever known....

editing slip ups
loved the story and great work from the narrator but at a couple of points there where mistakes in the edit with the end of words and the space between words having been cut out

Another great book from mr Butcher
I realy loved this book. The twists and turnes where easy to follow but never predictable, this is something rear in fantasy books. I would recommend this book in a heartbeat. Enjoy

Kate Reading is wonderful as usual
Kate reading remains one of my favorite narrators, and the story is interesting. However, half of chapter 50 is missing, and what I assume to be fanfares between cd's in the original production aren't removed in edit.
Chapter 50 has a few important plot points, and it gets really confusing a few chapters later when you notice something's missing.

Exciting sequel
The book starts off as the first one ended: Poorly. Fortunately it diverges from the indulging any more bad writing and terribly tropes about magic high school after few chapters. What follows in an exciting adventure that literally kept be awake at night just to hear more.
Good:
- Exciting story
- Unique world, constantly expanding
- Excellent character building
Bad.
- Starts in tropy magic high school
- World building is soft, everything is imprecise and what little is established often contradicted.
- I am not a fan of the narrator, but you can get used to her odd style and slight lisp.

Overall good - has annoying sound effects
This audiobook has quit annoying audio effects after each chapter. The effect is loud enough to wake you if you listen to books before going to sleep.
Other than that it's quite ok book.

Toller zweiter Teil ...
Was wäre für andere Hörer sonst noch hilfreich zu wissen, um das Hörbuch richtig einschätzen zu können?
Sehr starker zweiter Teil ... Für mich ist alles dabei - faszinierendes Elementarkräftesystem, tiefgründige Charaktere und sich spannend aufbauende und stetig weiterentwickelnde Story. Bitte bald die nächsten Bücher online schalten!

Much better than the horrible first book
I found the first book of the series one of the worst books I've listened to recently.
Nevertheless, as reviews of this second book have been much more positive I've given it a a go.
It still suffers sometimes from inconsistent fury powers, improbable timing and inconsistent combat mechanics - but throughout the book I HAVE NOT felt insulted intellectually as was the case almost continuously throughout the first book.
Events make more sense and characters act much more true to their nature.
With this much improved quality, I'll likely get the third book of the series, as well.

Just as bad as the first one
I read a review saying that the series becomes much better after the first book. But I can't say that it does.
The characters are bland, the story feels so constructed and forced, the magic is very incoherent and I had a lot of "eye rolling"-moments.
This is just mediocre, unimaginative writing at its best /worst.
Don't bother, unless you are all out of new books.

Great book but not for headphones.
The book itself and Kate Reading are great, but getting my eardrums blown out by loud awful music now and then seriously diminished my enjoyment of this audiobook.
