Summary
Kituwah Falls, Tennessee, 2016. A three-year-old dies in a driveway, and the local paper runs her obituary without the word that killed her.
Eighteen-year-old Samantha Walker is valedictorian, a motocross racer, and the best rifle shot in Monroe County. She has watched the pill mills empty her mountain town one funeral at a time. After she threatens rival racer Bo Wruck with a bullet, the two of them take the same deal to stay out of jail: write it all down in a journal for the school counselor.
Bo's family does collections for the clinics. Sam's grandfather, Sarge, a Vietnam veteran farming land his people have worked for generations, has started a list of his own. It names the clinics, the doctors, the deputies on the take, and the Knoxville drug duchess who runs them all.
Told through Sam's and Bo's journals, small-town obituaries, and the dealers, doctors, and old soldiers caught in between, Jellybeaners is Appalachian country noir about the opioid epidemic. It finds the jokes inside the funerals and never stops caring about the people the pills destroy.
Narrated by the author in his own digital voice, with Sam and Bo performed in licensed digital voices created with ElevenLabs.
