I am a regular guy. That's right...not a big deal, not a known author; just a regular kind of guy. As a matter of fact, I am mostly unknown. I kind of like it that way. Being a big deal...a famous person has a major downside for me. It's too much attention to allow for one to just be real and alone, when one wants to be.
At one time, growing up, I used to admire people I heard on the radio stations I listened to. Back then radio was like TV...or podcasts, before anyone even knew what a podcast was. It was what us older folks call the 'old days'. Those people I heard on the radio were admirable to me. They had personalities. Funny things to say, or interesting viewpoints to expound on. I had little of either one of those. Nothing really funny to say and nearly no viewpoint to expound on. So after realizing there were platforms like being a disc-jockey or radio personality that one could get into and begin a career of having a personality or being funny; I thought that was my path going forward. Somehow I fantasized that these things would just appear once I was on that stage in life...I would be admired for being funny or having an interesting point of view. Little did I know that this was all a fantasy that would evaporate when I was expected to perform in those roles. I really had no experience to reflect on. I had no viewpoint that I could expound on. There were lots of moments of silence...awkward silence sitting in front of that microphone.
Later, after recovering from that state of mild shock, I discovered other things that were more admirable and useful. I could fix things. I mean I could tear something apart that was not working, and put it back together working. I began to be admired for that talent of fixing stuff. I was finally achieving at least part of my goal: people began to like me. Or, they liked what I could do.
Life went on, and I began to develop some insights into what it's like to become successful at something and how to put some humor back into living. I was developing a viewpoint. I began to see humor develop. I could see things that were really funny about me, and about my pursuit of happiness through being admired. It was laughable, literally.
I was getting a good education in school and a bit of college; with a 'major' stated as Theoretical Physicist. I loved physics and took to it like a fish in a big pond. Later on that pursuit fizzled out due to the fact that I was following a 'minor' in street chemistry. My zeal to become that theoretical physicist, burned out and I decided to just get a job and make some money instead. After a few years as a journeyman plumber and contractor, I discovered computers and that became a new avocation. Crawling under houses as a means of survival took a backseat to these new technical devices.
Afterall that, I settled into the role as a talented technical guy who could make technology work. I could actually help others with their technology problems. I became somewhat famous in a small way in a small community to the folks who needed someone like me. I really like this ability to help other people.
And so, after many successful years in that role...I eventually retired. But there were still years left for me to do something that I always had the urge to do: say something that was meaningful. I had enough experience at that point that I could finally put words together enough that had some value, something meaningful to say. That is when my role changed. I started to write stuff down. I had notes, ideas and stories to tell. Since I didn't really have any exciting experiences in a rather ordinary life...I started to fantasize and make up stories. Now I had the time to actually devote myself and the technology that had developed along the way...to creation. I was creating the stories and dreaming up what a character might do...I had re-discovered that urge to say something meaningful. I developed a vague idea of a guy who had excitement and interesting things going on in his life.
So to make a long story (which is now on bookshelves)...short: I became an author. I just stepped up to the plate, so to speak and took a swing at the first few balls thrown my way. Eventually, I began to make hits. Not homers, just grounders mostly, some were infield flies...and I almost went out. But I kept at it and here I am now, writing my BIO on Amazon's author's page. Good for me. Good for you. I now have a viewpoint, some things to say and the humor to not take it all too seriously. I hope you pick up one or all of my books and take a peek into what a little imagination, a good handle on today's publishing technology and the lubrication of a sense of humor, can do.
