I've been a GP in Auckland for nearly four decades, and for most of that time I watched the same story play out in my consulting room — patients doing everything they'd been told, and still getting sicker. More weight. More medication. More despair. As a doctor, that's hard to sit with. It sent me looking for answers.

What I found changed how I practise medicine.

The evidence pointing to carbohydrates as a primary driver of our metabolic health crisis is substantial, consistent, and — for reasons I explore in the book — largely ignored by mainstream health guidance. Therapeutic carbohydrate reduction isn't a fad. It's a clinically grounded intervention that I've seen transform lives in my own practice, and one that the research increasingly supports.

I'm a Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners, trained at the University of Nottingham, England, and I've published research on low-carbohydrate nutrition in primary care settings — including audit work across multiple New Zealand general practices and studies exploring barriers and enablers for patients trying to change the way they eat.
I collaborate with researchers and dietitians across New Zealand who share the conviction that food is medicine, that we are what we eat, and that we've been prescribing the wrong kind of food for decades.

I also run a low-carb Facebook Group, with over 8,000 members, because I believe this conversation can't stay inside the clinic walls. I have a particular commitment to Māori and Pacific communities, who carry a disproportionate burden of diet-related disease — communities whose ancestors, I'd argue, were metabolically far healthier before the modern diet arrived.

*The Food Fix* is the book I've wanted to write for years. It's not a diet book. It's my honest account of what the science says, what our health system has missed, and what becomes possible when we stop treating the symptoms and start addressing the cause.

I practise at Highbrook Medical Centre in East Tamaki, Auckland, New Zealand.
