Johnny Spalione

Born in 1955 in El Sereno, California, I grew up in a large Italian-Swedish American family of seven children. Our family moved frequently, and by age eight I had attended three elementary schools and lived in four homes, all around the diverse communities of East Los Angeles. When my father left, I became the man of the house at an early age. My mother raised seven children while keeping us involved in baseball, football, school activities, and community life.

Growing up in the late 1960s and early 1970s exposed me to a time of tremendous social and cultural change. While studying engineering and mathematics at Santa Clara University, I experienced the energy of a generation searching for identity and purpose. Those years inspired me to begin writing poetry.

In 1979, I began working with my longtime friend John W. to turn poetry into songs. We formed a band and spent years writing, rehearsing, and recording together, affectionately calling ourselves the Boneheads when booking studio time. Although the big break never came, the music and friendships endured for decades.

After starting a family and building a career as an engineer, I continued writing whenever life allowed. Years later, I returned to the stories, songs, and ideas that had stayed with me. Today, I am bringing those words to life through books that reflect a lifetime of family, music, work, observation, and experience.
