Jerry Spencer – Writer & Publisher

Jerry Spencer has been in publishing since 1983, when he co-created Tidbits, a weekly trivia-based newspaper that blended lighthearted storytelling, curious facts, and a distinctly local voice. Long before “desktop publishing” became a buzzword, Jerry was laying out issues on an early computer, learning to merge design, writing, and technology into a process that gave him a head start in what would soon become a publishing revolution. At its peak, Tidbits grew into 85 franchises across the United States, many of which are still active today, a testament to the enduring appeal of clever trivia and community-centered publishing.

Jerry’s wife carried the tradition forward and has been writing trivia as Tidbits for more than 30 years, keeping audiences entertained with surprising, fact-filled features. Together, they embody a unique family publishing legacy—one that combines curiosity, humor, and innovation in equal measure.

Beyond Tidbits, Jerry has worn many creative hats. He has written, produced, and advised across a wide range of projects that cross over between business, technology, and media. He pioneered computer-aided layout at a time when publishing still relied on paste-up boards and typeset columns. Later, he became equally comfortable moving between print, digital, and multimedia storytelling. His fascination with history has led him back to publishing and writing once again, this time with a focus on narrative nonfiction and documentary projects.

What ties it all together is Jerry’s drive to use words and ideas to spark interest and connection. From trivia columns to historical research, from small-town papers to projects with national reach, his work has always aimed to inform while entertaining. His career is also a reminder of how personal stories and small creative experiments can scale into movements that reach thousands of readers.

Today, Jerry continues to write, publish, and produce creative works—sometimes with humor, sometimes with historical weight, but always with a sharp eye for what makes a story stick. His projects blend traditional research with modern tools, including generative AI, to reimagine how history and storytelling can be presented to contemporary audiences.

Through it all, the same spirit that powered those early Tidbits pages—curiosity, cleverness, and a willingness to innovate—still defines his work. Whether on the back cover of a comic, in the pages of a trivia column, or in a historical film project, Jerry Spencer remains committed to creating stories that last
