Jalál C. Hockett

Jalál C. Hockett is a 22-year U.S. Army veteran writing cozy and grimdark fantasy from Texas.

Two decades in the Army taught him about loyalty, moral complexity, and what people become under impossible pressure — lessons that shape everything he writes, whether that’s the warmth of a Hearthfire in a sleepy village or a world with no chosen heroes and no mercy.

The cozy line finds magic in quiet places: small communities, inherited gifts, and the stubborn persistence of ordinary goodness. The Grey Deep series is something else — raw, dark, and unblinking, inspired by George R.R. Martin and Joe Abercrombie. Both lines came from the same place: a soldier who’s seen enough to know the world contains both.

The Grey Deep began with a real family story — his ancestor Mary Glendenning, nine generations back. When he’s not writing, he’s pursuing a Master of Education at Liberty University.

The Waking, Book 2 of the Grey Deep series, launches May 1, 2026.
