JJ Harrigan

Minnesota novelist JJ Harrigan writes historical thrillers. Let him take you back to three dangerous crises of late twentieth century that did so much to shape the world we’ve inherited today.

In GOODBYE CUBA (2023), Lt. Charlie Parnell, single mom Isabel, and her daughter Angelita all get trapped in Havana when the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis erupts. With nuclear war at stake, this is the most dangerous moment in history. In GOODBYE BOBBY, Charlie (2024) puts his stepdaughter Angelita at risk in the tumultuous year of 1968. He takes a dangerous trip to Hanoi on behalf of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, seeking an end to the war in Vietnam. In GOODBYE Demons (2024), Angelita is now an adult who joins the Peace Corps, falls in love with, and marries a U.S. diplomat. When he is taken captive during the Iranian Hostage Crisis of 1979-81, they each confront their own set of demons.

JJ’s baptism in foreign intrigue came during the Cold War when he served as a soldier in Germany and later as a U.S. Foreign Service Officer stationed in Brazil. He subsequently taught political science at Hamline University in St. Paul where he chaired the department, served a term as assistant dean of liberal arts, and led the committee that established the university’s graduate school program. He also served as a popular speaker in the Foreign Policy Association’s Great Decisions program. Then he discovered the power of historical thrillers to engage people with our past.

A product of the Midwest Rustbelt, JJ attended college thanks to the GI Bill, graduated from Loyola University in Chicago, and earned graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and Georgetown University. Today, he scribbles his tales of intrigue on the banks of the St. Croix River near St. Paul where he lives happily with his wife Sandy.
