Graham Broyd

Graham Broyd is a British-America businessman, writer and athlete. Born in Dorking, England, he went to school in Bedford and then Liverpool, before taking two gap years working and hitchhiking in and around Europe. In 1978, he went to Birmingham University to study International Relations.
After graduation, Graham started a career in international banking, with his primary purposes being to travel and earn some money - in that order of priority. His first assignments were to New York and the Republic of Panama. Graham spent almost forty years in banking, his time spent mostly split between New York and London, before retiring in 2024. He was CEO of the North American businesses of the Royal Bank of Scotland and Mr. Fix-it when the bank encountered existential problems after the global financial crisis in 2008.
After his retirement, Graham found his writing voice. A lifetime storyteller, Graham wanted to write down the twenty hitchhiking stories he had told for more than forty years from his original trip to America in 1980. On hearing the stories, friends had always encouraged him to write a book. And so he did.
Graham is married to Betsy, who he met in Manhattan back in 1982. They have a son, James, and a daughter, Peyton, both now married and living in the New York area.
Graham's first book, 'The Panama Canal Treaties: The diplomacy and economics behind the treaty that changed the international order', was published in 2024.
Three books are in the works, and all will be professionally published.
'Backpack, Jacket, Surfboard. My Journey Across America, Then and Now,' published on August 12th, 2025. And already an Amazon bestseller.
This is Graham's great voyage of self-discovery as he hitchhiked across the USA. Twenty remarkable stories as Graham hiked from LAX to Tijuana; Malibu Beach and San Francisco; Yosemite and Death Valley; New Orleans, Washington DC, and New York. Discovering America, and himself, and reflecting on the changes to America between 1980 and 2024.
'Faster Than You At 60. The remarkable backstories of the fastest sprinters in the World, aged over 60.'
Twenty-two life stories of the World and US National sprinting champions, why were they not Olympians as young men, how did they return to the sport later in life, and how did they retain their health and speed today?
Graham has represented the US National Track and Field team at the last 2 World Masters Championships.
'The Forest Gump Of Finance. How Graham stumbled into the most consequential financial and banking events in the last 40 years.'
Graham's wild and important stories of how he ended up sitting in the room when financial history was being written. Money Laundering for the Medellin Cartel, the Plaza Accord, the Global Financial Crisis, the LIBOR scandals, September 11th, the largest Banking acquisition in history, Bear Stearns and Lehman Bros bankruptcy, the rollercoaster ride of Crypto.
And hopefully, many more books after that.
