David Ian Giffen

David Ian Giffen is a Scottish-born Canadian author, theologian, former Anglican priest, and pastoral counsellor whose work explores the intersection of Christian faith, human suffering, responsibility, and redemption.

Educated at Huron University College at Western University in London, Ontario, where he completed undergraduate and graduate theological studies, Giffen spent more than a decade in ordained ministry, serving congregations in Toronto and London. His pastoral work centred on community outreach, restorative justice, spiritual care, and the challenges of living faithfully in a rapidly changing world.

Beyond parish ministry, he has worked on the front lines of community mental health and crisis response, including with the Canadian Mental Health Association. His experiences in ministry, mental health, addiction, and recovery have shaped a body of writing distinguished by its willingness to engage difficult questions about faith, institutional responsibility, and the possibilities of grace.

He is the author of Redemptive Trauma: Confession of a Defrocked Priest, a deeply personal exploration of faith, failure, and the struggle toward recovery.

His latest book, GiffontheWay: A Three-Year Lectionary Companion, draws upon years of preaching and theological reflection. Following all three years of the Revised Common Lectionary, with additional reflections for selected Roman Catholic feasts, it offers clergy and lay readers an invitation to encounter familiar Scripture with fresh questions and renewed attention.

Through his writing, Giffen continues to explore the relationship between what Christians profess on Sunday and the difficult, frequently complicated business of living those convictions throughout the rest of the week.
