Combative Arts

The Author writing under Combative Arts is a medically retired Army captain, former Airborne Ranger, sniper, husband, father, and survivor of two invisible wars: combat and mental illness.
From his early childhood struggles with feeling different, to finding purpose in military structure, Combative recounts his journey through the ranks of the elite 75th Ranger Regiment, where discipline, precision, and unwavering focus transformed him into a highly skilled sniper and battlefield leader. Rising from enlisted soldier to Staff Sergeant before earning his commission as an officer, he would go on to lead sniper teams through some of the world’s most dangerous combat environments—where split-second decisions meant the difference between life and death.
But while Combative excelled on the battlefield, another battle was quietly unfolding inside his mind. Long before the diagnosis, paranoia, voices, hypervigilance, and fragmented thoughts had become constant companions—traits that sometimes sharpened his survival instincts in combat, but slowly began to erode his sense of reality away from the mission.
In this powerful memoir, Combative pulls readers into the hidden cost of service as he confronts the devastating effects of paranoid schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder. With unflinching honesty, he shares the pain of medical retirement, the struggle of transitioning into civilian life, the challenges of marriage and fatherhood, the daily fight against hallucinations and flashbacks, and the resilience required to keep moving forward when your greatest enemy lives within your own mind.
More than a military memoir, Through the Scope is a story of survival, identity, vulnerability, and hope. It is a testament to the unseen battles fought by veterans and countless others living with mental illness—and a reminder that even in darkness, purpose can still be found.
