Nora Veil Cases

The dead cannot challenge the records left behind. Nora Veil can.

London, 1903.

For eleven years, hospital almoner Nora Veil has protected the modest property of patients who die without family advocates. Her work is quiet, exacting, and largely unnoticed—the careful administration of savings accounts, personal effects, unpaid bills, and the final instructions of people whose lives might otherwise disappear into institutional paperwork.

Then the file of Agnes Tully reaches her desk.

A solicitor’s reference number was assigned before the hospital officially released the estate. Another file shows the same irregularity. Then a third. When Nora reconstructs the dates, she discovers something impossible: letters describing patients as deceased were written days before their deaths.

Someone inside St. Augustin’s has been providing advance information about vulnerable patients and the property they will leave behind.

Nora follows the trail from the hospital’s records room to a respected firm of solicitors, an accommodating property agent, and a sequence of estates quietly diminished after their owners could no longer object. Every document brings her closer to the truth—and places her in greater danger of professional isolation, institutional retaliation, and the destruction of the evidence she has spent her career learning to protect.

The people behind the scheme are confident that no one will examine the accounts closely enough to expose them.

They have not accounted for Nora Veil.

What Remained of Them is the first Nora Veil historical mystery: an atmospheric story of institutional corruption, quiet courage, and one woman’s determination to ensure that even the smallest life is accurately recorded.
