Written as the epitaph Stevenson wished to have on his grave, the poem approaches death without fear or despair. Instead, Stevenson looks back on a life willingly lived and imagines death as a return home—a sailor coming in from the sea, a hunter returning from the hills.

Should This Life Sometime Deceive You by Alexander Pushkin is a brief but enduring meditation on disappointment, patience, and the changing nature of life. Written in the form of gentle advice to someone facing hardship, the poem reminds us that sorrow and frustration are not permanent. Pushkin urges the listener to meet difficult moments without bitterness, trusting that time can alter circumstances and that happiness may return when least expected. Simple, direct, and quietly philosophical, the poem explores a timeless question: how should we respond when life does not unfold as we hoped?

Published in 1849, near the end of Poe's life, A Dream Within a Dream is a short meditation on loss, impermanence, and the limits of human control. The speaker first confronts the disappearance of hope, then turns to the image of golden sand slipping irretrievably through his fingers. The poem's central question is not simply whether life is a dream, but whether anything we experience can truly be held onto. Poe gives no solution to this problem. Instead, he forces the reader to confront an uncomfortable reality: some things cannot be preserved, no matter how desperately we try to grasp them.

Written in December 1854, shortly after the disastrous Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War, The Charge of the Light Brigade commemorates the cavalrymen who rode into overwhelming Russian artillery after a mistaken order. Tennyson's poem is both celebration and memorial: it acknowledges that “someone had blundered,” yet deliberately places the soldiers' courage and obedience at the center of the poem. It was first published on December 9, 1854, only weeks after the battle.

Few poems have been quoted as often—or misunderstood as thoroughly—as Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken. Published in 1916, it presents a traveler confronted with two diverging paths in a yellow wood and forced to choose between them. On the surface, it looks like a celebration of individuality and choosing the unconventional path. But Frost deliberately makes the two roads almost indistinguishable: both are described as equally worn, and the speaker cannot know where either would have led.

Why sing Walt Whitman's poetry? Simply because, on a melancholy day, while reading his poems, a melody came to me. It was the melody of a sailor—a son—returning to port with sorrow in his heart, pleading through his song. Pleading with life itself that this death not be true. Yet with each verse came the quiet realization that reality cannot be undone by words alone. Still, a chant, the gentle waves of a melody, can offer solace—a comfort not unlike a childhood lullaby.
