When She Died braves grief's gritty landscape with unflinching honesty. Additionally the in-real-time journal entries point to all the ups and downs, madness, and heart-wrenching immediacy of a spousal loss. This is balanced by a retrospective on the death and its aftermath 30 years later. This book is anything but a clinician's take on grieving. Rather, it is an intensely private and thoughtfully laid out map for all the various stages of grief from a personal vantage point that ultimately emerges as something profoundly universal.

I suppose there were a few of us. The period from 1963 to 1970 was arguably one of the most dynamic periods for social change in the West. Some of us were either blessed or cursed to be teenagers during this eight-year period. Amid a hail storm of raging hormones and psychological uncertainty, I found that the Beatles were there to guide me through a personal upheaval that I wasn’t able to manage on my own. Their music and quirky media personae lent a steadiness to my teen years where there otherwise was none.

This is a fictional short story of a man’s life and death. The Greeks got it right long ago. Many aspects of our lives are tragic. The Father/son relationship – such an unsavory mix of love and hate. Pride and shame. Support and competition. Wouldn’t it stand to reason that what plays out in the family, also plays out on the world stage. And here, in as few words as possible, the irony of ironies is laid out in a narrative. An often humorous narrative. The son ponders the uncomfortable juncture of mid-life as his father tries coming to terms with his final days of life.
