The driving of the golden spike at promontory Summit in Utah on May 10, 1869, almost didn’t happen. No history book mentions this crucial event. Youthful Will Braddock was one of the few people who knew about this. Leland Stanford, former governor of California and now president of the Central Pacific Railroad, is bringing the golden spike to the ceremony to commemorate the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Young Irish thug Paddy O’Hannigan, Will’s long-time antagonist, sneaks aboard Stanford’s train, grabs the spike, steals Will’s horse, and races away.

In the vibrant streets of Lavapiés, Madrid, young Iker harbors an ambitious dream: to play for the iconic Real Madrid Football Club. However, a significant challenge stands in his way - his diagnosed scoliosis, which many believe makes the intense world of professional football an unattainable dream for him.

Fifteen-year-old Will Braddock works as a hunter for his uncle's survey team as the transcontinental railroad extends across Wyoming in 1868. Paddy O'Hannigan is determined to get even with those who caused the death of his father—which means Will, his uncle, and former slave Homer Garcon. And Paddy has other nefarious designs: he intends to blow up presidential candidate Ulysses S. Grant's train on the general's campaign trip into Wyoming.

Will Braddock doesn’t want some old judge dictating his future. The newly orphaned fourteen-year-old embarks upon a quest to determine his own destiny. He heads west to find his uncle, a surveyor on the first transcontinental railroad. He has to convince his only living relative not to sign the judge’s papers sentencing him to a blacksmith apprenticeship.
