Published in 1913, My Childhood is the first in an autobiographical trilogy by the Russian writer and five-time Nobel Prize-nominee Maxim Gorky. Painfully moving in places, the book tells of the experiences of a young boy who goes to live with his grandparents following the death of his father. Gorky’s depiction of 19th-century Russia through the eyes of his younger self is remarkable. As he recalls memories of his youth, contrasting themes and emotions are revealed, from barbaric joy to dark gloom, genuine cruelty and saint-like forbearance.

Published in 1923, My Universities is the final instalment in the autobiographical trilogy by five-time Nobel Prize-nominee Maxim Gorky. Despite his failed attempts to enter the university at Kazan, Gorky forges an education of his own as he encounters an unusual array of characters–revolutionaries, religious fanatics, theological students and eccentric schoolteachers. Snatching cherished moments for reading books, a relief from the drudgery of his work in a bakery, Gorky comes to see the superficiality of a formal education.

Maxim Gorky, whose real name was Alexey Maximovich Pyeshkov, is probably the best-known late-19th-century Russian fiction writer among the English-speaking world. His pen name translates as Maxim the Bitter, which attitude is reflected in many of his works. Much of his writing reflects his own terrible life experiences and suffering. It is in his short stories that he reveals his true genius. "Her Lover" describes the plight of a lonely, alienated woman who creates an imaginary lover for herself.
