Publié sous forme de feuilleton en 1852, "La case de l'oncle Tom" est le récit du destin de deux esclaves noirs vendus par leur propriétaire dans le Kentucky. Les trajectoires de Tom et d'Eliza sont opposées : tandis que Tom accepte sa condition, Eliza, pour éviter d'être éloignée de son fils Henry, va chercher à se frayer un chemin vers la liberté. In debt, Kentucky farmer Arthur Shelby reluctantly decides to trade two of his slaves. The two, middle-aged Uncle Tom and young Harry, are to be sold to Mr. Haley, a detestable slave trader. Eliza, Harry's mother and Mrs. Shelby's maid, overhears the details of the arraignment, warns Uncle Tom, and flees with Harry to the north. Eliza and Harry barely make it across the Ohio River before slave catchers can catch up with them. On the run, Eliza and her family seek shelter and safety.

Harriet Beecher-Stowe schildert in ihrem Roman zwei dramatische Schicksale in den USA des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die Sklavin Eliza flieht mit ihrem Sohn Harry, der verkauft und damit von seiner Mutter getrennt werden sollte, nach Norden und trifft dort hilfsbereite Sklavengegner. Parallel dazu erleben wir den Leidensweg von Onkel Tom, der nach dem Verkauf an einen Sklavenhändler immer weiter in die amerikanischen Südstaaten vordringt und dabei das Elend der Sklaverei aus nächster Nähe und am eigenen Leib erfahren muss.

Eigentlich haben es Tom und seine Familie ja besser getroffen als viele andere Sklaven, werden sie doch von ihrem Herrn verhältnismäßig gut behandelt. Doch eines Tages wird Tom von seiner Familie getrennt und zusammen mit dem Sohn der Haussklavin an einen skrupellosen Sklavenhändler verkauft. Während es der Haussklavin und ihrem Sohn gelingt, in den sklavenfreien Norden zu fliehen, muss Tom auf dem Schiff weiter den Mississippi in den tiefen Süden hinabfahren.

This Christmas tale set in colonial New England was originally published in the 1895 collection A Budget of Christmas Tales by Charles Dickens and Others. The short story takes place in a fictionalized version of Litchfield, Connecticut, the town where Stowe grew up, which is also the setting of her novel Poganuc People: Their Loves and Lives.
