I survived a situation. I awoke in a dark basement with 14 other people. We were in dog cages and our arm and legs were cuffed into another cage. The cages made a circle. Of those in cages, some of the other captives were compassionate, brave people; others were total jerks. There were all kinds there in the basement with me. I liked some, hated some, pitied a few, and would have killed a couple if given the opportunity.

Polar Knights is based on true events. In 1845, The HMS Erebus and Terror set out for a study of magnetism and the search for the Northwest Passage. Every member of the crew either vanished or was found as a mummy or a skeleton. The native people tried to explain what happened to the men and even claimed that some men survived and lived among them. No one believed them. In 2016 the world became interested in the story again after the ships were found, sunken far from where expected. (But exactly where the natives claimed they could be found.)

The town sits alone. Empty. Overgrown. It’s like any southern town that residents desert and leave to fall to ruins. What isn’t like any usual small, abandoned town is that every 20-odd years, anyone in this town falls prey to a strange horde of monsters that enjoys nothing more than hurting humans. When a group of urban explorers discover the ruins of an old school building, they face the monsters, and they will endure more than they could ever imagine.

For the month of October 2017, J. Ellington Ashton Press, on their Wicked Little Things blog-talk radio, broadcasted a series of Halloween stories. These “Fireside Stories” (as they were called) were a big hit with the listeners, and the decision was quickly made to publish these tales of terror in an anthology.

Don't hint that Richard Hauptmann was executed as an innocent man. Don't dare to think that Charles Lindbergh had clean hands when it came to the kidnapping and murder of his son. It's unpopular and may be dangerous to say aloud, but there was no kidnapping at the Lindbergh estate in 1932...No kidnapping...Instead of the story of the American hero and the trial, those parts are summarized, and the emphasis is on the actual evidence and the investigation. Hauptmann was innocent, there was no kidnapping, and the true killer is named.
