America's black intellectuals - writers, historians, educators, and community activists - have made major contributions to the struggle for equality and human rights throughout American public life. The key streams of thought that gave rise to the intellectual traditions associated with African Americans emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries. These same traditions continue to develop and influence social and political processes today.

Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD, recording his private notes to himself and ideas on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius wrote the 12 books of the Meditations in Koine Greek as a source for his own guidance and self-improvement. It is possible that large portions of the work were written at Sirmium, where he spent much time planning military campaigns from 170 to 180.

A Grief Observed is C. S. Lewis's deeply personal and poignant reflection on the intense grief he experienced following the death of his wife, Joy Davidman. Written as a series of journal entries, the book offers an intimate glimpse into Lewis's raw emotional journey, where he grapples with profound sorrow, anger, doubt, and ultimately faith. In this powerful meditation on loss, Lewis confronts his own beliefs about God, suffering, and the afterlife, questioning his faith and the nature of divine love in the midst of overwhelming pain.

Benjamin Franklin is the only one of America's founding fathers to have signed all three of their foundational documents: The Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, and the 1783 Treaty of Paris. These documents underpinned the establishment of the United States of America as a sovereign country. In addition to being a prominent politician, Benjamin Franklin was a prolific writer, fervent naturalist, and determined inventor. This collection of writing reflects Franklin's varied activities and manifold talents.

To listen to The Sayings of Marcus is to walk beside an emperor who governed not through cruelty or conquest, but by reason, restraint, and virtue. This collection presents rare, firsthand glimpses of Marcus Aurelius not as a distant symbol of power, but as a human being navigating the immense burden of imperial responsibility with unwavering Stoic discipline. Here is Marcus confronting betrayal with mercy, rejecting revenge in the arena, and speaking candidly of philosophy, war, death, and duty. His words, at once spare and profound, offer a timeless testament to character under pressure.
