In this deeply personal episode of The Photog Files, Rick Nelson explores the quiet feeling so many photographers carry: the fear that they don’t truly belong among the “greats.”
After a conversation with a friend whose work was displayed beside world-traveling documentary photographers and celebrated visual storytellers, Rick dives into the myth of photographic greatness — and why legendary status has far less to do with miles traveled, dramatic biographies, or public recognition than we’ve been led to believe.
Through reflections on photographers like Vivian Maier, Saul Leiter, Fan Ho, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and others, this episode becomes a reminder that meaningful photography is not measured by passport stamps or prestige… but by honesty, attention, emotion, and the ability to truly see the world.
If you’ve ever felt behind, ordinary, unseen, or undeserving of your place in photography, this episode is for you.
Because maybe greatness was never about becoming larger than life.
Maybe it was simply about learning to see life deeply enough that others can feel it too.
