• The Meeting Isn’t the Work
    21 Oct 2026

    The Meeting Isn’t the Work

A meeting can feel incredibly productive without actually producing very much.

We talked. We shared ideas. Everyone contributed. We may have even scheduled another meeting. But when people walk out of the room, what is actually different?

This week, we look at one of the easiest traps in school leadership: confusing conversation with progress. Some meetings absolutely need to happen. The problem isn’t meetings themselves. It’s bringing people together without being clear about what the work is supposed to accomplish.

We explore why repeated conversations carry a cultural cost, how poor follow-through slowly teaches people that their time and thinking may not matter, and why leaders should match the communication tool to the work. Sometimes the answer is a full meeting. Sometimes it’s an email. Sometimes three people simply need 15 minutes together.

The real test is simple: what moved because we met?

If a meeting ends without a decision, a clear next step, an assigned owner, or a problem that is meaningfully closer to being solved, leaders should ask whether the meeting was the right tool in the first place.

    What You’ll Hear:

    • Why productive conversation isn’t always productive work
    • The cultural cost of repeatedly reopening the same issues
    • Why unclear outcomes can lead to disengagement and multitasking
    • How to decide between a meeting, an email, or a smaller conversation
    • Why every meeting should leave something different behind
    • How clear ownership and next steps turn discussion into momentum

    Key Takeaways:

    • A meeting can feel productive while creating very little actual change
    • Leaders should decide before a meeting what should be different when people leave
    • Reopening the same issues without clear records or follow-through erodes trust
    • The communication tool should match the work
    • Every meeting should end with a decision, a clarified next step, or an assigned owner
    • Meetings should create momentum, not simply consume time

  • Families Don’t Experience Departments. They Experience Your School.
    14 Oct 2026

Families Don’t Experience Departments. They Experience Your School.

Schools organize themselves into departments because it makes the work manageable.

Families don’t experience us that way.

When a parent reaches out with one problem, they aren’t thinking about student services, communications, counseling, administration, or which department owns the answer. They simply see their child’s school — and every handoff, delayed response, and communication gap becomes part of that experience.

In this episode, we sit down with Ian Nenke to explore what school leaders can learn by looking at our systems through the eyes of families. We talk about parent communication, cultural differences, responsiveness, trust, and why sometimes the best thing a leader can do is take ownership of finding an answer rather than sending a family somewhere else.

We also look at how easily internal structures can become external frustration. One example: a single parent email with several questions that ultimately touched four different offices. From the school’s perspective, that may make organizational sense. From the family’s perspective, it can feel fragmented, slow, and confusing.

The question isn’t simply whether each department is doing its job well. It’s whether the entire experience makes sense from the other side.

    What You’ll Hear:

    • Why families experience the school as one system, not separate departments
    • How handoffs and communication gaps can quickly become trust problems
    • Why a quick, honest response matters even when you don’t yet have the answer
    • Why taking ownership often matters more than knowing exactly who “owns” the issue
    • How small, sincere interactions help families decide whether a school feels responsive, connected, and human

    Key Takeaways:

    • Families experience the whole school, not the organizational chart
    • A short, honest response is often more valuable than silence
    • Leaders build trust by taking ownership and helping families find answers
    • Small interactions across a school can strengthen the sense of community
    • Seeing the school through a parent’s eyes can reveal gaps that internal structures hide

  • Your Morning Boost - The Fatal Flaw of Grading: Why Your Averages Lie
    21 Oct 2025
Are you unknowingly using a grading system that actively punishes student growth? In this episode of Your Morning Boost, we continue our deep dive into grading reform with experts Dr. Chad Lang and Dr. Matt Townsley. They expose the mathematical flaw of traditional averaging—specifically, the disproportionate, damaging impact of the zero on a student's final grade, which often represents a lack of submission, not a lack of learning. The discussion tackles why "Hodge Podge grading" obscures the truth about student progress. The Crucial Question: What's the clearest step you can take to stop averaging from diluting competency? Key Takeaways:The zero has a six times more disproportionate, negative impact than a perfect score has a positive one.Why a grade based on an average of compliance, effort, and knowledge is not true communication. An immediate, actionable step: Replace the numerical zero with a non-numerical "missing evidence indicator" to preserve the integrity of the academic grade. The clear alternative: Disaggregate the data and use descriptors (like Beginning, Developing, Proficient) to communicate mastery of specific standards. You can find out more about our guests by visiting https://www.awbeducation.org/contributors-lineup. 20 Oct 2025
Are you wrestling with the myths around modern grading? In this critical episode of Your Morning Boost, we dive deep with leading grading experts, Dr. Chad Lang and Dr. Matt Townsley (co-authors of A Parent's Guide to Grading and Reporting). They tackle the single most critical philosophical misconception leaders must address: the notion that changing grading practices lowers the bar or reduces accountability. This conversation is a must-listen for leaders ready to move beyond tradition and establish a clear, modern purpose for grading. Key Takeaways:The difference between a "retake" and a meaningful reassessment requiring corrective work. Why traditional grading can create an "inflated grade" that masks a lack of true competency. The critical need to define the purpose of grading in your school or district (Hint: It’s communication!).You can find out more about our guests by visiting https://www.awbeducation.org/contributors-lineup. • Your Morning Boost - External Relations and The Essential First Step to Digital Archives
    17 Oct 2025
Want to immediately boost alumni engagement? The secret is personalization, and your archives hold the key. In this concluding episode, Dr. Kristen Gwinn-Becker, CEO of History IT, explains how schools can effectively use a truly accessible digital archive for alumni and donor relations. The strategy is simple: connect donors and alumni with content about their personal experience—their photos, class events, or specific interests—to "move the needle further than a cold, general email." For schools ready to start, Dr. Gwinn-Becker emphasizes the essential first step: a strategic plan that begins with a comprehensive collection assessment. Don't just "jump in" and scan files only to lose them later; prioritize true preservation and accessibility through meticulous cataloging and tagging. Her final, most crucial advice for school leaders: start early and ensure your investment is focused on making materials searchable and meaningful, as this is where the real value lies. Key Takeaways: Learn how personalized archival content drives donor relations; understand the critical role of a collection assessment and strategic plan; and prioritize accessibility—the tagging and cataloging—to ensure your archive brings new value. • Your Morning Boost - The Educator's Superpower Mastering the Art of Reading the Room
    10 Oct 2025
Do you wish you could stop disruptions before they start? This episode dives into the essential educator superpower: the ability to read the room and decode students' nonverbal cues. We argue that nearly every classroom disruption gives off secret signals that can be identified through careful, proactive observation. Learn to identify and respond to three types of subtle cues: Physical Shifts (like slumped posture signaling overload), Vocal Shifts (sudden changes in tone or volume), and Environmental Cues (clutter or detachment signaling mental escape). Discover powerful strategies, such as proximity interrupts, that reset student focus. This isn't just about classroom management; it's about proactive care and fostering a harmonious, trusting learning environment. • Your Morning Boost - The Grading Marathon is Over How Microfeedback Saves Your Weekend and Boosts Student Learning
    9 Oct 2025
Are you drowning in papers, feeling like your grading effort doesn't translate into actual student learning? It's time to stop the exhausting traditional grading marathon! This episode introduces microfeedback, a powerful, highly focused strategy that dramatically cuts down your time while maximizing student retention and immediate growth. The key is trading feedback volume for velocity: the brain processes small, targeted chunks better than overwhelming critiques. Learn three actionable strategies: 1) Commit to immediacy—one piece of actionable feedback on a single target skill within 24 hours (e.g., just the thesis statement); 2) Embrace the single-point rubric to hyper-focus students on one skill at a time, driving high-leverage growth; and 3) Leverage digital voice notes on platforms like Google Docs to deliver personalized, nuanced, and encouraging feedback in minutes, not hours. Transform your grading from a tedious task into a powerful learning tool. Save your weekends and refine your instructional aim!
