The name of the job has always followed the machine. Search engines gave us SEO and answer engines gave us AEO. Now AI agents shortlist, decide and often complete the booking. Agents don't search, they choose, so what do we call the job?

In this episode: the names in circulation (AEO, GEO, LLMO, AAO, AX), the cited, recommended, chosen ladder, five questions an agent asks about your business, the honest counterweight, and a test you can run today.

Notes on figures

- Research on whether ChatGPT reduces Google searches is split: one study (Lam et al., US panel, hosted by the FTC) found Google searches fell about 31% from 20 weeks after adoption; a Semrush study (Aug 2025) found no change.

- Research on AI referral conversion rates is also split: one study of 94 stores (Visibility Labs, 2025 data) found ChatGPT traffic converted 31% better than non-branded organic; a study of 973 sites (Marketing Science, 2026) found it converted 13% worse than organic.

- Pew Research (July 2025): clicks on 8% of visits with an AI summary vs 15% without.

Which tools track whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Copilot mention your brand, and can you trust the numbers?

In this episode Simon Young of Question.Marketing explains why tracking costs climb with every prompt, competitor and AI engine you add, why local results depend on where the tracking runs from, and why fan-out queries and different models give different answers. He then sets up Question.Marketing live in Nimt, looks at branded and general prompts, and explains why being recommended matters far more than being cited.

Notes on figures as spoken

07:13 Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit is listed at $99 a month per domain, billed annually, on its pricing page (checked 14 October 2026).

18:07 The 13% figure is from Meikai's September 2026 study and is about ChatGPT, not Perplexity: 13% of the domains ChatGPT cited ranked in Google's organic top 10 for the same prompt. Meikai sells a brand monitoring tool.

19:07 Content reaching the top of Google within 48 to 72 hours is from Simon's own case studies, not a published study.

20:14 The 60% AI Mode figure for Question.Marketing is one run on one day for a branded prompt.

15:31 the free audit Simon mentions is a basic free audit for potential clients. Question.Marketing's full AI visibility audit is a paid service.

21:03 Question.Marketing launched at the end of June 2026. Simon says "three months" at 10:43 and "three, four months" at 20:58.

Is Meta's Muse Charm a "surveillance Tamagotchi"? Simon Young of Question.Marketing asks whether we should worry about AI companions that live in our pockets, learn from our conversations and might one day sell to us.

He covers who owns the data you give these devices, whether Big Tech should pay us for it, what happens when your AI companion turns salesperson, the right to opt out, and why society may split over devices that record us. He also explains how he uses an AI recorder himself, and why he still encourages people to teach AI what only they know.

Notes on what is said

03:50 Simon says the 2016 UK general election. There wasn't one: 2016 was the EU referendum, and the general elections either side were in 2015 and 2017.

09:54 If you record calls or meetings with a device like Pocket, get everyone's consent first. Pocket notes that phone call transcription requires consent.

10:43 Simon says dots.com. The domain is dot.com: it is held by xAI and redirects to Grok, while dots.com belongs to a long-defunct company (TechCrunch, 29 Sep 2026). The $20 million price is unconfirmed.

11:05 The Charm is tap to talk. Zuckerberg: tap the fingerprint sensor in the corner and you can start talking (TechCrunch, 23 Sep 2026).

13:57 Teaching AI what you know is Simon's experience, not a guarantee of being cited.
