What We Need to Grow is a 79 Development conversation series with the people building what's next, hosted by Caleb Pedosiuk. Execution is getting cheaper. The scarce thing now is the clarity to know what's worth growing before you touch a single tool. Every conversation comes back to one question: not what can we do, but what should we be doing? We cover everything from mergers, acquisitions and private equity to regenerative agriculture, wellness and humanitarian work, and what it means to solve meaningful problems today. • Ep. 061 | Why Canada Has a Family Doctor Shortage When Care Is Free | Julie Wilson
    21 Oct 2026

Julie Wilson is a family physician and the CEO and Medical Director of Terra Nova Medical Clinics, a physician-led primary care network in British Columbia. She has grown it over eleven years from a single location to, by her own count, 25 clinics and 170 clinicians, in a province where solo practice remains the norm and where there is barely a business of medicine at all. She has been named one of WXN Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 and a Business in Vancouver Forty Under 40, and the group has been named Mid-Sized Business of the Year by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce. She did not set out to build a network. She started practising, decided things could be better, and made one structural change after another until the group stood apart.

In this conversation with Caleb Pedosiuk, Julie explains why free healthcare and available healthcare are not the same thing, and why the binding constraint on Canadian primary care is people rather than money. She breaks the demand picture into the parts that actually drive it, the young patients who have signed up with nobody until they need someone, the retiring workforce, and the outreach that barely happens because everyone has spent decades overwhelmed. She argues the bottleneck has now moved downstream to specialists, where wait times ballooned while primary care was being repaired, and she will not round the harm down. Asked how physicians find her clinics, she names AI search herself, and reasons about retrievability from the supply side rather than the marketing side. On AI in medicine she is a buyer rather than a sceptic, mapping scribes, decision support and chart search, and naming the real operational problem as paying ten subscription fees instead of one. But she draws a hard line at the clinical interview, with the best example in the episode: the patient who says they do not smoke until you ask whether they have had a cigarette in the past 30 days. And her warning on patient data reaches for the HIV precedent rather than a hypothetical, because she has watched a health fact become grounds for discrimination before.

Julie is exactly the kind of founder, innovator, and problem solver this series exists to put a light on. She treated an access crisis as an infrastructure problem and then spent eleven years building the infrastructure, bootstrapped, while still practising. Authority is earned by building things worth talking about, and an honest account of that work is what makes a brand understood, trusted, and findable by the systems people now ask for answers.

  • Ep. 060 | Why AI Recommends Airbnb Instead of Your Rental Business | Nathan Harwell
    20 Oct 2026

Nathan Harwell is the owner of B&B Hosting, an end-to-end short-term rental management company in Abilene, Texas. His background was in large commercial electricity contract structuring and negotiation, where he built a company to 49% ownership and then found he could no longer steer where it went, which is what pushed him into real estate. He and his wife joined the short-term rental mastermind Vodyssey, bought two properties, and inside a year held the number one and number two revenue properties in the Abilene market. In July 2024 they bought B&B Hosting from friends who had outgrown it, 19 properties at the time, and have grown it to just over 100.

In this conversation with Caleb Pedosiuk, Nathan describes running the AI visibility test on his own company before anyone suggested it. He asked ChatGPT and Claude where B&B Hosting showed up and got back third-party aggregators he does not even list on, and when he asked for the best way to book direct with an owner or property manager in his own market, he got Airbnb and VRBO and no mention of his company, despite having fed the model his website, his listings and his core values. He explains how he got a better answer by pointing the model at guest reviews instead of arguing with it, and he is honest that he does not know whether any of that persists. From there the conversation turns to the observation that the highest-volume searches carry brand bias, that people type Airbnb in Abilene rather than anything generic, and why a branded query is a mid-funnel opportunity rather than a loss to concede. He also lays out the hospitality-first model he says is his real differentiator, why most owners underfund the thing that creates it, and the trust gap opening in a market where most listings are being dressed up with AI-enhanced photos.

Nathan is exactly the kind of founder, innovator, and problem solver this series exists to put a light on. He went looking for his own brand in the place buyers now ask, found it missing, and understood immediately that the problem was structural rather than a matter of effort. Authority is earned by building things worth talking about, and an honest account of that work is what makes a brand understood, trusted, and findable by the systems people now ask for answers.

  • Ep. 059 | What Brands Actually Buy in a Sports Sponsorship | Scott Gwartz
    19 Oct 2026

Scott Gwartz is Vice President, New Partnerships for UCLA x Rose Bowl Properties at JMI Sports, which holds the commercial rights to UCLA Athletics and the Rose Bowl Stadium. He has spent more than twenty years in sports marketing partnerships and has managed over $110 million in corporate sponsorship campaigns and activations, with earlier stops as Executive Director of Corporate Partnerships for the Los Angeles Lakers and roles with the LA Clippers and the Dodgers. He began in tennis in the early 2000s, in a Los Angeles market with almost no competition for sponsorship dollars, and now sells into one with two of nearly everything. In this conversation with Caleb Pedosiuk, Scott takes apart what a brand is actually buying when it signs a sponsorship. He is unusually direct about the limits of the asset everyone pictures: a sign in a stadium delivers impressions and media value, and it cannot answer the question brands now lead with, which is what the investment did. He lays out the real inventory, on-site, on-air and online, then the two parts people underrate, the intellectual property that lets a brand call itself the official anything, and the experiences that money cannot buy. He explains why selling a concession depends entirely on who owns the building, why the most impactful partnerships he has worked on are the ones that improved the fan experience for the overwhelming majority of fans who will never be in the stadium, and how a university's own purchasing could become the loop that makes a partnership worth more to both sides. Asked what he needs most to grow, he says resources, and then names the harder change: more revenue from fewer partners, which means saying no.Scott is exactly the kind of innovator and problem solver this series exists to put a light on. He sells attention for a living and says plainly that attention is no longer the thing being bought, which is the same reckoning arriving for every brand that has been measuring reach instead of evidence. Authority is earned by building things worth talking about, and an honest account of that work is what makes a brand understood, trusted, and findable by the systems people now ask for answers.Learn more about JMI Sports: https://www.jmisports.comScott Gwartz at JMI Sports: https://www.jmisports.com/leaders/scott-gwartz/What We Need to Grow is Caleb Pedosiuk's conversation series from 79 Development, on growth, judgment, and the thinking behind building great companies.
