We continue our journey northwards, Padua in sight. In the town of Ro, we stop to eat at the pizzeria "il Famme di Lupi" (Hungry Like the Wolf). Its generous owner feeds us, takes us to a sports complex to shower, and even brings us a heater for the garage space that was our shelter for the night.

The experience opens up a conversation between Alberto and I about the symbolism of the wolf, and how it’s too often represented as the dark or shadow self that we try to hide from the world. We offer another interpretation to the familiar story that speaks of two wolves living within each of us, locked in battle, and the one who wins being the one you feed.

In truth, the image of the “bad wolf” is not real and does not exist because it represents a false idea of who we have accepted ourselves to be. There is only the eternally innocent, pure, loving, radiant Spirit that God created and that remains exactly as He created it.

No matter how “real” it looks or feels, there is no battle. There is no conflict. It is only in the mind that believes it can be divided and separated from its Source and all its brothers. This is this core belief that needs healing. And in accepting our True Identity, we can finally be at peace.

We understand this today, but 25 years ago, we were doing our best to heal what we perceived to be the bad wolf within us.

It becomes especially relevant in light of the big argument that Alberto and I have the next day, sparked by a newspaper article that misrepresented our pilgrimage. It made me want to control our message - and Alberto’s words - even more. I projected my fears upon him and blamed him for being the cause of them, while he did the same with me, blaming me for being the cause of his not being free to communicate his spiritual beliefs.

How many of us can relate to this?!

We even contemplated going our separate ways, but how could we then speak about peace if we couldn’t even find it between each other?

In this episode, we use these experiences to highlight the teaching that does indeed bring peace, and whose Teacher invites us to remember and accept:

“Nothing real can be threatened.

Nothing unreal exists.

Herein lies the peace of God.”

After our previous night’s conversation in Lugo, Alberto had started to call us angels. He had also been calling us messengers, instruments, channels, “delivery guys”… all of which I resisted in equal measure because I didn’t want to be boxed into a label. But the word angel evoked outright rejection: An angel was perfect. I certainly wasn't! I had flaws, fears, and many things I was still working through. And I told him it was arrogant to believe we were.

I wasn’t ready to consider then that he was only using a symbol to describe my willingness to let Love extend through me, no matter how I was judging my own readiness or worthiness of that task. It was precisely those judgments that needed to be healed.

The many symbols and experiences of that day’s walk to Giovecca form the foundation for today’s episode.

A Course in Miracles is always bringing us back to one simple yet profound recognition:

Our only error is believing we are something other than what God created.

The correction has already been made.

We need but accept it, release the false identity we have mistaken for our true Self, and remember the eternal innocence, wholeness and Love that never changed.

“I remain as God created me.” (W-139.11:3)

We arrive in Lugo and are looking for a place to sleep, when a car screeches to a halt ahead of us and a young man comes running towards us.

“I saw you walking and had to stop,” he enthuses. “Please, let me buy you dinner.”

We think it’s because of the signs on our backpacks or the newspaper article; but no. He has backpacked all over the world, and always appreciated it when people stopped to help him. He wants to do the same.

Our new friend Giordano opens his home to us, offers us his food, his clothes, his keys… and on this January 5, the eve of the coming of the Wise Men, invites us to stay an extra day to rest. A great gift indeed!

With his friend Gabriella, we have an unforgettable conversation about Life and death, about those we have loved and lost, about dreams, signs and the Light. We share the understanding that has comforted us for years:

We are not our bodies, and only Love awaits us beyond what we call death.
