Why would an eye appointment go through vision insurance one day and medical insurance another? A listener named Mike asked this question after a recent Take Care episode about choosing health insurance. In this episode, Melody Mulaik explains how the reason for your visit can affect which plan applies and what you may pay.
Vision insurance generally helps with routine care, such as a prescription check for glasses or contact lenses. Medical insurance generally applies when an eye problem needs diagnosis, monitoring, or treatment, such as eye pain, glaucoma, or cataracts. Coverage depends on your plan and how the visit is billed.
Melody also discusses refraction: the test used to determine a glasses or contact lens prescription. It may appear as a separate charge during a medical eye visit. Before your appointment, tell the office everything you want addressed and ask which insurance they expect to bill, whether refraction is included, and what you might owe.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- The difference between routine vision care and medical eye care
- Why the reason for your visit matters when booking
- How a refraction fee can arise
- Questions to ask before your appointment
- What to consider when deciding whether to add vision coverage
