What happens when the place that taught you about God becomes the place you no longer feel connected to your own spirit?

In this powerful conversation, Rob Sheely gets real about his decision to leave the church—and what he discovered on the other side.

Leaving wasn’t simply about walking away from a building, a denomination, or a religious community. It was about questioning what he had been taught, recognizing how deeply church culture had shaped his relationships and decisions, and learning to separate spirituality from organized religion.

Rob shares what it felt like to realize that some of the beliefs he once accepted without question were influencing who he trusted, who he spent time with, and even how he approached relationships.

And then came the harder question:

If I leave the church, what happens to my relationship with God?

This conversation explores the uncomfortable space between losing a religious identity and discovering a spiritual one that actually feels authentic.

For 28 years, I believed I was serving the Divine. I followed the rules, silenced my questions, and ignored the quiet voice inside me that kept whispering something wasn't right. This isn't a story about attacking faith. It's a story about what happens when control is mistaken for spirituality and fear replaces freedom.

In this deeply personal episode of Unchurched, I share the journey I never thought I would tell publicly—the emotional, psychological, and spiritual wounds that kept me trapped for nearly three decades. You'll hear the moments that broke me, the questions that changed everything, and how I found my way back to the God within me instead of the fear that had defined my relationship with religion.

If you've ever felt guilty for asking questions, afraid to leave, or wondered whether your faith belonged to you or to someone else, this conversation may help you realize you're not losing your faith—you may finally be finding it.

This isn't about leaving God. It's about leaving what stood between you and the Divine.
