After 38 years of sobriety and 5 years of podcasting, I finally had the good sense to put the two together. Unbottled is where we crack open all things sobriety—without the shame, the whispering, or the “I’m fine” face we all perfected in the 90s.

This is a space for honest conversations, practical tools, laugh-so-you-don’t-cry stories, and the kind of truth that only comes after decades of doing the work and living to tell about it. Whether you’re sober-curious, long-time sober, or somewhere in the messy middle, we’re going to talk about the habits, people, boundaries, victories, and ridiculous moments that shape a sober life.

Think of Unbolted as the place where we unhook the armor, loosen the bolts, and talk real sobriety—candid, witty, a little sassy, and full of hope because life gets a whole lot lighter when you stop tightening everything down and start opening up.

  • How To Build A Real Life After Quitting Alcohol
    16 Oct 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

I hit record, thought I captured a whole conversation, and realized I hadn’t been recording and honestly that irritation is a perfect doorway into today’s topic. Because sobriety isn’t just about not drinking. It’s about learning how to live in sobriety when the day is ordinary, your mood is real, and nobody is handing you applause for doing the next right thing.

I talk about what changes when alcohol is no longer the center of your schedule: the quiet freedom of a normal evening, the ability to be present for dinner and a movie, and the slow return of trust in yourself. If you’re early in alcohol recovery, I also say this clearly: not drinking today matters and there is no “just” about it. And if you’re hearing other people’s hopeful stories and feeling behind, remember their experience is not your deadline.

We get practical about emotional sobriety, relationships, and boundaries. Not everyone will trust your change right away, and you don’t owe your full history every time you say “No, thank you.” I also dedicate a newcomer corner to the most important next steps: withdrawal safety and medical care when needed, reaching out before things feel unbearable, and building a plan around support instead of proving yourself.

If you got something from this, subscribe to the show, share it with someone who might need a little company today, and leave a review so more people looking for sobriety support can find us. marcybackhusmedia@gmail.com

  • AA Promises For Newcomers
    9 Oct 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

In this episode of Unbottled, we break down the AA Promises in plain language—and talk about what they do and do not guarantee when you’re new to sobriety.

The Promises aren’t about getting a perfect life. They’re about something much bigger: freedom from obsession, relief from regret, and hope that today doesn’t have to be forever.

    We talk about:

    • Where the AA Promises appear in the Big Book, in connection with Step Nine
    • Why the Promises don’t mean life suddenly becomes easy
    • What “freedom” can actually feel like when alcohol stops running your mind
    • Facing regret without allowing your past to control your future
    • Making amends and rebuilding trust through consistent, dependable actions
    • Learning to like yourself as your actions begin to match your values
    • Why the Promises often arrive slowly—and show up in ordinary little moments

And in Newcomer Corner, we’re talking directly to anyone in their first 30 days of sobriety: find one sober person, get their number, and use the phone. You do not have to figure all of this out by yourself.

I also have two questions for you:

Which of the AA Promises is the hardest for you to believe?

And if you’ve been sober for a while:

Which Promise surprised you the most when you realized it was actually happening in your life?

Send me your answers at marcybackhusmedia@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you.

And if you know somebody who is new to sobriety, please send them this episode. Sometimes hearing that life really can change is exactly what someone needs in those first few days.

This is Unbottled—sobriety uncorked, unfiltered, and unapologetically real.
