One man is always chasing the next challenge. The other would rather sit beside a river.

And somehow, they're both searching for the same thing.

In this episode of UNLOADED, Michael and Shannon explore the very different ways they approach life, responsibility, risk, happiness, and the weight we choose to carry.

Shannon opens the conversation by sharing his philosophy of keeping life simple.

He's driving a 25-year-old pickup, has owned only four personal cell phones in his lifetime, enjoys thrift-store shopping, and sees little reason to replace something that still works.

For Shannon, owning less isn't simply about saving money.

It's about freedom from the responsibilities that come with owning more.

Michael, on the other hand, approaches life with an entirely different philosophy.

From changing careers and launching businesses to moving his family to Hawaii, Michael has spent much of his life pursuing opportunities, embracing change, and challenging himself to accomplish things that others might consider impossible.

And Shannon admits something that makes them both laugh:

Sometimes watching Michael live his life gives Shannon anxiety.

But beneath their differences, the conversation reveals some surprising similarities.

Both men value nature, simplicity, personal reflection, and finding peace away from the demands of everyday life.

Michael shares how his early-morning meditation practice provides balance to a life filled with responsibilities and constant activity, while Shannon explains how minimalism helps him avoid becoming overwhelmed in the first place.

They also explore fear, failure, and the courage to take chances.

Michael describes how repeated failures have shaped his willingness to keep trying, while Shannon acknowledges that his preference for safety and simplicity can sometimes prevent him from pursuing experiences he might genuinely enjoy.

    One of those experiences?

Finally buying the motorcycle he'd wanted for years.

As the conversation unfolds, both recognize that neither approach is necessarily right or wrong.

Some people thrive by building, creating, and taking risks.

Others find fulfillment in slowing down, appreciating what they already have, and keeping life uncomplicated.

And many of us need a little of both.

Ultimately, Michael and Shannon arrive at something they share deeply: a desire to be genuine, care for others, and leave the world a little better than they found it.

Different personalities. Different priorities. Different roads.

    But perhaps the same destination.

Sometimes the biggest change in your life isn't something you have to explain. The people who love you can see it.

After nearly eight years with the same company, Michael's previous professional chapter has officially come to an end.

And a new one has begun.

In this episode of UNLOADED, Michael and Shannon finally get to have a conversation they've been looking forward to for weeks—one without having to dance around the details of what's been happening behind the scenes.

Michael shares his experience during his first week at a new company, where his background in leadership, safety, and operations led the organization to create a position specifically for him.

For the first time in years, he's no longer the Vice President.

    He's the new guy.

And surprisingly, that feels pretty damn good.

From being welcomed by a new leadership team to getting back into the field and working alongside crews, Michael describes a professional environment that has already brought a renewed sense of purpose and excitement.

But perhaps the most meaningful moment comes after his first day.

When Michael walks through the door at home, his wife immediately notices something different.

He looks a thousand pounds lighter.

After weeks of discussing emotional weight, difficult decisions, and the courage to walk away from something that no longer aligns with who we are, Michael is finally experiencing the other side of that decision.

And then there's the story of his first major professional challenge.

His new employer gives him six months to earn an important safety certification.

Michael decides to take the exam almost immediately.

What follows is an unexpected adventure involving a highway closure, a plane crash, a lengthy detour, a race against the clock, an intense certification exam, and a piece of paper he initially refuses to look at.

    The result?

He passes. On his first attempt. During his first week.

Michael and Shannon share some laughs about the experience, but underneath the story is something more meaningful: the feeling of being valued, welcomed, and excited to contribute again.

This episode isn't about pretending that change is easy.

It's about recognizing that sometimes the difficult decision you've been afraid to make can lead to something you didn't realize you needed.

    A different environment.

    A renewed sense of purpose.

    A little more breathing room.

And the opportunity to begin again.

Sometimes you don't realize how much weight you've been carrying until someone who loves you notices that it's finally gone.

  • What Will You Carry Next?
    21 Oct 2026

What happens when you've spent years carrying a heavy load—and suddenly you can put it down?

For most of us, life becomes a cycle of responsibilities, expectations, stress, and simply pushing through. We learn how to carry the weight. We become good at it. Sometimes so good that we forget what life feels like without it.

But what happens when that weight finally disappears?

In this episode of UNLOADED, Michael and Shannon continue their conversation after Michael decides to resign as Vice President after nearly eight years.

For the first time in a long time, Michael describes feeling genuinely lighter.

    The backpack is off.

And Shannon asks an unexpected question:

    Now what?

Instead of immediately filling that empty space with new obligations, Michael shares how he's approaching the next chapter of his life with something familiar from his military experience: a 30-day battle plan.

He explains how he maps out his goals, considers best- and worst-case scenarios, develops alternatives, and creates a practical plan to move forward.

But this battle plan isn't only about business.

It's also about rebuilding the personal routines that suffered during several difficult weeks—meditation, reading, exercise, and making time to recover mentally and physically.

Michael shares a glimpse into his early-morning routine, his dedicated meditation space, and why returning to those simple practices helps him begin each day with greater clarity.

The conversation also explores the difference between doing something for a paycheck and pursuing something because it genuinely matters to you.

With Raven Eight Transport underway and another venture on the horizon, Michael recognizes that the next chapter will bring its own responsibilities.

And that realization leads to an important commitment:

Be intentional about what you put back in the backpack.

Because just because you can carry something doesn't mean you should.

Michael also shares a moment of genuine fear after making several major financial and professional decisions—and how he worked through that moment by acknowledging the emotion, returning to the facts, and building an action plan.

Sometimes courage isn't the absence of fear.

Sometimes it's feeling the fear, sitting with it, and asking:

    What's next?

The conversation continues as Michael and Shannon explore what it means to move forward without automatically rebuilding the weight you've worked so hard to put down.
