Let's dive into the dark underbelly of a remote border region in Central Asia.. On March 2nd 2022, in broad daylight, 19yo Ulykbek Berdyshev Ұлықбек Бердішев disappeared from his military base at the border with Kyrgyzstan. Forty days later his body was found, just across the border. Another suicide? The cards say otherwise. This puzzling, complex story involves a golden boy, a heroic mother, a fortuneteller, and a house of ill repute. This one felt so urgent when I found it, and it really got to me. I have the strong impression it's not over.
