Who should be a team captain?
The oldest athlete? The most talented player? The person everyone likes?
Not necessarily.
In this episode, Kate McCauley talks about choosing team captains based on leadership, character, communication, accountability, and the ability to influence the team, not simply seniority or athletic ability. But here's the part that often gets missed: choosing the right captain won't magically fix team drama.
A captain can help influence team culture, but they can't carry it alone. Coaches still need clear expectations, athletes need to take ownership, and the entire team has a role in creating an environment built on trust, communication, and accountability.
Kate breaks down what coaches should look for when choosing captains, what can go wrong when the wrong athlete gets the role, and why leadership needs to be developed throughout the team—not handed to one or two athletes and forgotten. A captain isn't the person who fixes the team. A captain is someone who helps lead the team toward the standard everyone is responsible for.
