How do we know what we know about Titanic?

The Titanic Provenance Files is a Titanic history podcast that goes beyond retelling the familiar story to investigate the evidence behind RMS Titanic.

Through artifacts, documents, eyewitness testimony, photographs, books, films, and conversations with leading Titanic researchers, host Damon Henrichs traces how the history was discovered, disputed, reconstructed, and remembered.

Each Case File takes one object, source, or story and asks what it can really tell us about the ship, the people aboard her, and the night Titanic was lost.

  • Case Note 006: Following the Evidence | Titanic Mysteries That Keep Unfolding
    15 Oct 2026

What happens when a historical investigation takes on a life of its own?

In this special midseason edition of The Titanic Provenance Files, host Damon Henrichs reflects on the surprising directions Titanic research can take, and how questions raised in one episode can lead to unexpected discoveries in another.

What began as an exploration of Titanic's Collapsible Lifeboat A with historian Mark Chirnside eventually led to a mystery involving an engagement ring. Just two episodes later, Swedish Titanic historian Claes-Göran Wetterholm helped unravel the story behind that remarkable artifact.

Meanwhile, our investigation into an anonymous letter referenced in Walter Lord's A Night to Remember continues to lead us through archival correspondence, family histories, and unanswered questions.

We also explain the purpose of our shorter Case Notes episodes, why investigations don't necessarily end when a Case File is published, and why sometimes the most important conclusion a historian can reach is simply, "We don't know yet."

Because in Titanic history, the evidence doesn't always lead where you expect.

    The cases remain open.

If you're enjoying The Titanic Provenance Files, please follow the show and share it with someone who shares your fascination with Titanic.

  • Titanic Artifacts: A Diary, a Ring, and the Immigrant Story of Titanic | Claes-Göran Wetterholm
    8 Oct 2026

What can two small Titanic artifacts reveal about the people aboard the ship?

In this episode of The Titanic Provenance Files, host Damon Henrichs speaks with Swedish Titanic historian, author, and ethnologist Claes-Göran Wetterholm about two remarkable objects featured in Musealia’s Titanic: The Human Story exhibition in Austin: Jacob Alfred Johansson’s diary and Gerda Lindell’s ring.

Johansson’s diary gives us a rare glimpse of Titanic before the disaster, including life aboard the ship through the eyes of a Swedish-speaking Finnish third-class passenger. Gerda Lindell’s ring takes us into the aftermath of the sinking, Collapsible Boat A, and the extraordinary path by which one tiny object survived the North Atlantic, official custody, family history, and rediscovery.

This conversation also reframes Titanic as an immigrant ship. While Titanic’s third class is often imagined as overwhelmingly Irish, the Scandinavian and Nordic passengers formed a major part of the steerage story. Claes helps us understand what passengers like Johansson and the Lindells were leaving behind, what they hoped to find in America, and how their stories survive through diaries, rings, postcards, archives, and family memory.

    You’ll hear about:

    • Jacob Alfred Johansson’s diary and what it reveals about life aboard Titanic
    • Gerda and Edvard Lindell’s tragic connection to Collapsible A
    • August Wennerström’s account of the final moments around the lifeboat
    • How Gerda Lindell’s ring was recovered, returned, and rediscovered decades later
    • Why Titanic should also be understood as an immigrant ship
    • How personal artifacts become historical evidence

If you are interested in Titanic history, Titanic artifacts, third-class passengers, Collapsible A, or the evidence behind what we know about Titanic, this episode offers a deeply human look at how small objects can carry enormous stories.
