  • Black Folks Sweet Potato Pie with Condensed Milk: Can You Swap Evaporated Milk Without Losing That Classic Soul Flavor?
    Nov 19 2023

If you’ve ever found yourself mid-recipe wondering, “Can I use sweetened condensed milk instead of evaporated milk in sweet potato pie?” — this episode is your answer.

    Because not only can you…
I’ve tested it, perfected it, and turned it into a signature variation of my Black Folks Sweet Potato Pie™ that still delivers that smooth, spiced, nostalgic bite we grew up on.

    This isn’t guesswork. This is tested, legacy-rooted technique—with a modern, make-it-work twist.

In this episode of The Soul Food Pod, I’m breaking down how to make a Black folks’ sweet potato pie with condensed milk that’s rich, a little sweeter, and still deeply soulful. We’re talking texture, spice balance, and how to keep that custard silky without losing structure.

And yes… we’re keeping my signature flavor DNA front and center:
that clove + ginger duo layered with cinnamon and nutmeg—the same combination that helped define my original viral recipe.

  • Black Folks Southern Tea Cake Recipe
    Nov 12 2023
This "Black folk tea cake recipe" (that's what they're called!) is an old-fashioned nostalgic Southern soul food treat! What you'll learn in this episode: What is a Black folks' Southern tea cake? African American tea cakes are a somewhat fancy Southern dessert. Little round cakes. Light, airy, and sometimes compared to soda bread or pound cake. Tea cakes are typically served with hot tea at gatherings like weddings, christenings, and family events. Or any other pomp and circumstance dress-up occasion (which Black folks love). Are tea cakes African-American? It's believed that enslaved African Americans created tea cakes to reproduce the fluffy European confections that white Americans were accustomed to. African Americans made their own version of tea cakes based on what was available to them with limited baking supplies. What do you serve with tea cakes? Why is the tea cake important to African Americans?Where did tea cakes originate? What are tea cakes made of?What do old-fashioned tea cakes taste like? How do you make Black folks' old-fashioned tea cake?
