The Scarlet Plague by Jack London is a haunting post-apocalyptic novella that imagines the collapse of civilization after a deadly global epidemic. First published in 1912, the story takes place decades after the Scarlet Death has destroyed most of humanity. An elderly survivor, James Howard Smith, wanders through the ruins of the San Francisco Bay Area with his grandsons, attempting to preserve the memory of the vanished world.
Through his account, listeners discover how quickly social order, technology, education, and wealth disappeared when the plague spread. London combines science fiction, adventure, and social criticism to explore humanity’s vulnerability and the fragile foundations of civilization. The contrast between the old man’s knowledge and the children’s primitive existence gives the narrative both emotional power and historical depth.
This complete audiobook offers an accessible way to experience one of Jack London’s most imaginative works. It is ideal for listeners interested in classic science fiction, dystopian literature, survival stories, pandemics, and reflections on human progress. Listen online and enter a ruined future where knowledge struggles to survive alongside humanity. Its concise length, vivid imagery, and unsettling message make this prophetic tale especially compelling for both new readers and devoted classic-literature enthusiasts.
