The Reel Critics Network S2 E8 National Association of Black Journalists Conference 2026
    25 Aug 2026

In This episode Reggie Ponder and Katia Woods frame their conversation as an NABJ-driven discussion rather than a movie-focused interview, reflecting on the convention as a “family reunion” and a space to address recurring issues in Black journalism. They break down NABJ’s “thumbs down” award to Stephen A. Smith (along with other entities), arguing the controversy overshadowed positive convention work and stressing concerns about his inconsistent critiques—especially toward Black women—his political commentary while emphasizing “journalist,” and his decision to respond on shows like Sean Hannity without defending NABJ’s purpose. They then debate how journalism is being dismantled through layoffs, weak leadership, venture-capital ownership, declining advertising support, and lack of collaboration, while noting audiences often reward gossip media over substantive reporting. They close by celebrating NABJ programming around Paramount’s “Children of Blood and Bone,” praising the footage, culture-forward approach, major cast and creatives, and discussing release/awards-season possibilities, along with their current writing and TIFF plans.
