From the outside, it looks like it's working. You're capable. You're the one people count on. And privately, something has been off for a long time.

People call it burnout. It looks like burnout — the exhaustion, the flatness, the sense that something is wrong. But burnout is the symptom, not the source.

What's actually happening is quieter. The over-functioning that gets called dedication. The invisible labor that gets called being responsible. The mental load that gets called what you're good at. The shrinking that gets called maturity.

Nobody's lying to you when they say it. That's what makes it work so well.

Some rooms applaud you for it. Some rooms just expect it, and would only notice if you stopped. Either way, you're the one holding it — at work, at home, in the caregiving, in the faith community, in the advocacy nobody sees.

You're not falling apart. You're still delivering. You've just started to feel like a stranger in your own life. You can't rest your way out of that, and you can't boundary your way out of it either.

The Quiet Cost is for capable women navigating what hides underneath the burnout: identity, invisible labor, and the cost of being the one who holds it all together.

Each episode meets you where you are — still functioning, still capable, and quietly becoming someone you don't recognize. Recognition first. No homework.

  • Busy Is the Strategy | Why capable women keep their calendars full
    26 Oct 2026

Your calendar is full, and what you feel looking at it is something close to relief.

Not dread. Relief. Because a full week means no gap long enough for anything quiet to surface — and the quiet is the part you don't have a plan for.

This is the version of burnout that doesn't feel like exhaustion. It feels like momentum. Movement as strategy: keep filling, keep moving, keep the system running, never sit still long enough to notice what's underneath it. Tiffany Howe walks through what the busy is actually doing for you, why an empty afternoon can feel more dangerous than an overloaded one, and how "I'm not burnt out, I'm just really busy" turns out to be the same sentence.

And the busiest season of the year is coming. For the next stretch, busy won't just be tolerated — it'll be celebrated. The best cover you've ever had, arriving right on schedule.

Send this to the busiest woman you know. She'll tell you she doesn't have time to listen. That's the point.

  • They Called It a Superpower
    19 Oct 2026

You've been told you have a high bar. That you catch what everyone else misses. That people can count on you. It's meant as a compliment and you take it as one — and underneath it, you're doing work nobody sees to make sure the compliment stays true.

Charlise Clark Gwin spent twenty-six years in corporate finance. The feedback kept coming back the same way: Charlise has a really high bar. Her company had a word for that category. They called them superpowers.

This conversation is about what the bar was actually made of. Being the only one in the room, and what that asks of you before you've said a word. The preparation that isn't preparation — it's proof. What it costs to be infallible on purpose. And the sentence that reframes all of it: she has never, in her whole career, given a workplace more than seventy percent of herself.

Both things are true at once. She doubled down publicly and withheld privately, and nobody thinks to look for self-protection in the person with the highest standards in the building.

    In this episode:
    — Why over-functioning gets praised instead of noticed
    — The invisible labor of being the only one, and why it never shows up in anyone's job description
    — What it does to your identity when the thing you're known for is armor
    — Burnout that doesn't look like burnout, because you're still holding it all together
    — What she hands down to the next person on purpose, knowing exactly what it costs

If you've ever been praised for something you built out of necessity, and felt strange about the praise without knowing why — this one's for you.

Nothing to do with this. Just notice what you've been called lately, and what that word is actually covering.

Charlise Clark Gwin is a leadership coach and the founder of Upper Echelon Coach. She spent more than twenty-five years in corporate finance — beginning in public accounting at Arthur Andersen, then internal audit, manufacturing and operations finance, and three separate turns as a CFO across Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 companies, plus five years leading finance for a charter school network in Memphis. She now coaches emerging and mid-career leaders, with a particular focus on core values and on the leaders who are the only one in the room.

  • Three Minutes Late, Every Time | The quiet signs of losing yourself without noticing
    12 Oct 2026

You are a punctual person. You've always been a punctual person.

So you can't explain why, for a year, you were three minutes late to almost everything. Not thirty. Three. Enough to notice. Enough to be annoying. You left on time and still walked in late, and after a while you stopped trying to explain it and just started apologizing.

It wasn't a time management problem.

This one is a story — one small behavior, followed all the way down to what was actually underneath it.

What's your version of the three minutes? The thing you keep doing that doesn't match who you know yourself to be? Reply and tell me — some of these are going on air.

    In this episode:

    • Being late by three minutes, consistently, and not being able to fix it no matter how early you leave
    • The gap between who you know yourself to be and who you're watching yourself be — with no explanation that makes sense
    • Dread that doesn't announce itself as dread. A body that didn't want to walk through that door.
    • Why the behavior that doesn't match your identity isn't a discipline problem
    • What it means when the thing you keep doing is the only part of you still telling the truth

New here? Start with It Looks Like It's Working.

The Quiet Cost is for capable women who are still delivering, still praised, still holding it all together — while something underneath goes quiet. Burnout, over-functioning, invisible labor, the mental load, self-abandonment, and the slow work of losing yourself inside a life that looks like it's working.
