  • Second Chances
    22 Oct 2026

The Pipeline Podcast stays on the road in Abilene, filming at the Howdy Media Studio with two plumbers from the data center project site: Bill and Ernie.

Bill is an old-school journeyman and a union man’s son. His dad was a union welder, and Bill started out stuccoing houses for $7 an hour before joining the apprenticeship. He talks about working his way up from cast iron piping in a hospital to his med gas endorsements, and about joining DSI in Lubbock after hearing the company didn’t have the best reputation. Ernie is a second-year apprentice plumber who got his start after a rough stretch left him struggling to find work. A call from Bill got him an interview, and he’s been building a new career ever since.

    They also get into:

    • Why the trades give people a real second chance, and how a rough past doesn’t have to define your career
    • The five-year apprenticeship: night school, a $1 raise every six months, and why the cohort you go through with becomes your brotherhood and sisterhood
    • Bill’s first look at Stratus and 3D models as an old-school journeyman, and how the technology sped up production once he got used to it
    • A day in the life on a massive data center job site: 4 AM buses, stretch and flex, JHA/STAR cards, barricades, fire watch, and dust that never quits
    • Working alongside other trades, and the backhoe favor that saved a day
    • Language barriers on the job site and learning to work as a crew
    • Plumbing licensing in Texas, from journeyman to master, and why Bill hasn’t made the jump
    • How AI-made images and logos are becoming part of the show
    • Balancing work and family with long hours, newborns, and a little barbecue and football to decompress

A great watch for anyone considering a career change, looking for a fresh start, or curious what it’s really like to work on one of the biggest job sites in Texas.

  • Jack of All Builds: Jason 22 Years at DSI, Army Discipline & Building Data Centers in Abilene
    8 Oct 2026

The Pipeline Podcast hits the road for its first remote episode, filmed on location in Abilene, to sit down with DSI Project Manager Jason. Nearly 22 years in, Jason has a résumé that keeps surprising the hosts, and the stories to match.

Jason traces his path from the Army, where he served as an infantryman with the Old Guard and the presidential escort, to the mechanical trades, and how a lunch invitation and a very bad round of golf led to his job at DSI. He shares what the military taught him about discipline, teamwork, and owning your name, and how those lessons carry over to running projects today.

    They also dig into:

    • The projects behind the résumé: a platinum LEED building, the Great Wolf Lodge water park, a county maximum-security jail, Kyle Field, and now a massive data center build
    • The story of a visitor locked in a jail cell on a Friday afternoon, and a job site shut down by the Secret Service
    • The Omni hotel water main burst that made the news, and the lessons from an eight-month fix
    • How technology, detailing, and prefabrication are changing the trade, and why a younger generation is bringing a new culture and passion to the field
    • Why the trades are a smart alternative to a four-year degree: earning while learning, building a retirement, and avoiding debt
    • Building a team in remote, out-of-the-way locations, and how limited logistics drive innovation (and plenty of duct tape)
    • Jason's advice for interns and new hires: "cube farm or job trailer?", show up on time, mean what you say, and own your mistakes (admit it, correct it, move on)

A great listen for anyone considering a career in construction, project management, or the trades, or anyone curious what a career spent building everything from jails to data centers looks like.

    10 Sep 2026

The service department gets its first turn on the mic, with John Gaga and Joe Bill Hale joining to talk about a side of the trades that's a little different from the pipe and sheet metal world — and just as demanding.John shares how his company, Service Mechanical Group, was acquired by DSI in 2023 (plus an infamous fajita-delivery story that had the whole office thinking he'd lost his mind), and breaks down how DSI's service department is structured across Dallas-Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan/College Station, Austin, and San Antonio — each with its own specialty, from chillers to hospital-critical HVAC. Joe Bill, a 27-year DSI veteran, talks candidly about his winding path in — including an unforgettable backstory as a former police officer and DEA narcotics task force member before landing in HVAC — and gives an old-school-to-modern breakdown of how service work has changed, from flipping through the "AC Bible" to today's solid-state, software-locked systems. They also cover:Why DSI's acquisition philosophy — treat people right and they stay for decades — sealed the deal for SMG's leadershipHow service work varies by region and market: chillers, plumbing, healthcare-critical HVAC, and moreThe growing complexity of modern equipment — soft starts, sensors, and "hard fails" replacing the simple on/off mechanical systems of decades pastManufacturer software lock-in and why being "well-rounded" beats being a specialist in one systemHow AI training is being rolled out across their teams, from technicians to sales to back-office staffWhy self-investment — showing up, staying curious, increasing your knowledge — separates the technicians who grow from the ones who don'tThe explosive growth in demand for skilled HVAC labor and apprenticeship enrollmentA great listen for anyone curious about the service side of the trades, career changers considering HVAC, or leaders managing growth across a decentralized team.🔧 Learn more about DSI: https://dsi.us/Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/033SLVdnIvRl8MANxfxb1WInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/pipelinepodcastdsiLinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/dynamic-systems-a-quanta-services-company📩 Have a topic or guest suggestion? • Field Experience, AI, and the Future of Project Management with Jade & Thomas
    13 Aug 2026

This episode dives into project management, pre-construction, and the growing role of AI at DSI, with guests Jade Martinez and Thomas Trask.Jade shares her path to DSI — starting as a project coordinator with no construction background, briefly leaving to pursue nursing, and returning to a brand-new role where she now works almost exclusively with AI to build tools and programs for DSI's design teams. Thomas talks about his journey from a high-school-and-college internship at DSI, to years in oil and gas project management, to landing back at DSI in 2018 to run high-profile commercial jobs — including a large water park and a major concert venue — before moving into estimating and pre-construction.Together, they get into:Why staying close to the field makes for better, more grounded project management and leadershipA powerful story about standing firm on worker safety, even under pressure from a client"Engaged leadership" — what it actually means to lead from the trenches, not just walk by with a coffeeHow Jade is using AI (including building her own tools) to automate repetitive designer workflows, sync dashboards, and remove hours of manual busyworkHow AI is reshaping pre-construction and estimating — turning scattered, incomplete project information into faster, more accurate risk assessments and pricingThe "human in the loop" mindset: using AI as a tool, but staying the editor and final decision-makerWhy DSI's growth (and being part of Quanta) is opening up new paths and opportunities across the companyA great listen for anyone curious how technology is starting to reshape construction project management from the ground up — without losing the field experience that makes it work.🔧 Learn more about DSI: https://dsi.us/📷 Instagram: @pipelinepodcastdsi💼 LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/dynamic-systems-a-quanta-services-company/📩 Have a topic or guest suggestion? • Building the OSM Division — James & Matt on Modular, Prefabrication & Scaling DSI
    30 Jul 2026

This episode dives into the origin story and growth of DSI's Offsite Manufacturing (OSM) and modular divisions with James Martinez (Modular & Industrial Group) and Matt Lucas — two of the people who helped build it from the ground up.

James and Matt trace their own paths into DSI — from being recruited at a college bar to working as a project manager on brutal, high-stakes jobs — before walking through how OSM actually got started: a cold-contact opportunity with an automobile manufacturer, a scramble to fly a team to California with 3D scanners in hand, and building the very first modules through Winter Storm Uri with no power and no home to go back to.

    They break down:

    • How DSI went from piping-only to building their own steel manufacturing capability
    • The "Frankenstein building" proof-of-concept that became a full steel shop
    • Lessons learned scaling a brand-new division across multiple states and job sites
    • Why prefabrication and OSM are force multipliers for labor efficiency
    • How robotic/AI-assisted welding fits into solving the industry's labor shortage — and why it's not about replacing welders
    • The mindset that drives DSI to take on projects outside their comfort zone, and why "we can do it, we just have to figure out how" is the culture

This one's a behind-the-curtain look at how a construction company builds an entirely new business line from scratch — the wins, the setbacks, and the lessons that came with it.

    20 Jul 2026

This episode brings three voices from DSI's Houston shops into the studio: Chelsea, Lainey, and Jude — each with a completely different road into the trades.Chelsea shares her journey from working in restaurants and specialty food (and even a stint as a cheese monger) to chasing a childhood dream of construction after a career counselor once told her it wasn't in the cards. Lainey — dubbed the "Nevada Queen" — talks about growing up on a farm, going through welding school, and landing her first interview with none other than Mike Nobles himself. And Jude walks through an incredible path from repossessing cars and pipeline work to becoming a General Foreman, including the story of "buying his book" into the union and betting on himself by selling his welding truck to fully commit to DSI.Together, they open up about:What it's really like starting a trades career later in life or after a total industry switchThe difference between pipeline and industrial/commercial piping work — and the culture shock of moving between themCamaraderie, mentorship, and what it means to be part of a union "brotherhood and sisterhood"Women in the trades — and why some say they make exceptional weldersHow DSI organizes production across a dozen-plus simultaneous jobs (color coding, barcoding, and QR tracking)The double-edged sword of technology like Stratus and AI-assisted welding — speed and efficiency vs. keeping foundational trade skills sharpWhy stability, growth opportunities, and company culture keep them at DSIReal talk on pay growth in the trades and why skilled labor isn't going anywhereIf you've ever wondered what it actually looks like to start over in a new career — or wondered whether the trades are a viable path today — this episode is full of honest, grounded answers.
