The Root of Jealousy | Dr. Jared Thompson

Scripture: 1 Samuel 18:6–10

In this Chapel at Luther Rice message, Dr. Jared Thompson, Master of Arts in Christian Leadership Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor of Leadership, teaches from 1 Samuel 18 about the danger of a jealous heart and how it can turn a leader from friend to fiend.

Looking at King Saul's response to the women's song, Dr. Thompson examines the root of jealousy from four angles: misdirected glory, misinterpreted encouragement, misguided hypocrisy, and mishandled leadership. He explains how our "comparison culture" feeds jealousy, why a growth mindset rooted in God's limitless blessing matters, and how unchecked jealousy leads to destructive results.

This message challenges students, pastors, ministry leaders, and every believer to guard their hearts against comparison, celebrate the success of others, and lead with humility, doing "nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit."
