www.KhalisHouse.com - Welcome to the Khalis Podcast, a platform for aspiring and established writers, poets, artists and academics who are passionate about preserving and furthering Sikh and Panjabi heritage. Khalis (ਖ਼ਾਲਿਸ) is a versatile word; as well as meaning "pure" in Arabic and Sanskrit, in the Persian context it means "free" or "independent". This idea of independence forms an integral part of our vision. With this podcast we aim to supplement our publication work with meaningful discussion on history, ideology, philosophy, culture and the identity that shapes who we are today, as Sikhs in the 21st century.© 2026 The Khalis Podcast Art

  • Darkness Defied | Episode 8 | Chapter 10: “I Will Be a Martyr...”
    11 Sep 2026

In the final episode of Darkness Defied, we read Chapter 10.

Following the assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, police officers implicated in the disappearance and illegal cremation of thousands of Sikhs turned their attention towards those who had gathered the evidence against them. Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra understood the danger, yet refused every opportunity to hide, leave Panjab or seek protection from the institutions of the Indian state.

The chapter recounts his final visit to his parents, his abduction from outside his home on 6 September 1995, the efforts made by his family and companions to locate him, and the long legal struggle that followed. It also considers what can be established about his final weeks in police custody, where physical torture and the threat of death failed to break his resolve.

Bhai Khalra had already removed the fear of death from his mind. His composure under barbaric oppression, and his complete acceptance of Satguru’s will, placed his martyrdom within the deepest traditions of the Khalsa Panth.

The episode concludes with a brief introduction to the life and work of the book’s author, Bhai Ajmer Singh, followed by Ranveer Singh’s concluding reflections on the final chapter and the audiobook series as a whole.

  • Darkness Defied | Episode 7 | Chapter 9: Two Noteworthy Visits to Canada
    4 Sep 2026

The Khalis Audio Library continues with Chapter 9 of Darkness Defied: The Life and Legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra, written by Bhai Ajmer Singh.

Chapter 9 – Two Noteworthy Visits to Canada follows Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s two important visits to Canada in the spring and summer of 1995.

By this point, his investigation into unclaimed bodies and secret cremations had placed his life in serious danger. Friends and well-wishers urged him to leave Panjab, while Canadian parliamentarians offered political asylum to him and his family. Bhai Sahib understood that accepting the offer could save his life, but refused to abandon those whose suffering he had taken responsibility for exposing. He asked: if he remained safely abroad, who would protect the thousands of Sikh families and innocent children facing the violence of the Indian state?

During these visits, Bhai Sahib addressed Canadian parliamentarians, human rights organisations and Sikh Sangat. He presented evidence concerning the disappearance and extrajudicial killing of thousands of Sikhs, exposed the limitations of India’s courts and national human rights institutions, and called upon the international community to act.

Yet his message extended beyond documenting abuses or seeking justice through existing institutions. Bhai Sahib spoke openly about Khalistan, the right to self-determination and the need for a national home in which Sikhs could live freely and with dignity.

He also challenged those within the diaspora who believed that the Khalistan movement had ended. The armed struggle had been suppressed through overwhelming state violence, but the conditions that produced it had never been resolved. State repression could kill individuals, but it could not extinguish the demand for freedom. Bhai Sahib therefore placed a clear responsibility upon Sikhs living abroad to continue the work of Khalistan rather than retreat into personal security and material comfort.

The chapter closes with his journey through England and Vienna, where he continued raising the issue of the disappeared and delivered what would become his final speech outside India. His words carried both warning and hope: Sikhs could not depend permanently upon the goodwill of other nations, nor could they allow future generations to remain without a home of their own.

This is the penultimate chapter of Darkness Defied.

  • Darkness Defied | Episode 6 | Chapter 8: Revealing the Truth About Unidentified Bodies
    30 Aug 2026

In Chapter Eight of Darkness Defied: The Life and Legacy of Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra, Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra’s investigation takes a decisive turn.

What began as a search for individual victims of enforced disappearance develops into the discovery of a systematic pattern: Sikhs killed in police custody and their bodies cremated as “unidentified” or “unclaimed.”

Following the paper trail through crematorium registers, municipal records, post-mortem documentation, timber receipts and witness testimony, Khalra and the Human Rights Wing begin assembling documentary evidence of mass secret cremations. Their investigation would ultimately document 6,017 unidentified cremations in Amritsar district, while pointing towards a far greater number across Panjab.

As the evidence mounts and families begin pursuing cases through the courts, so too does the danger facing Bhai Khalra and those working alongside him.
