You didn't become a nurse practitioner just to diagnose disease and prescribe medication.

You became an NP to solve problems, understand the whole patient, and make a lasting difference.

The Integrative Clinician by BridgeWell is a podcast for nurse practitioners who want to think differently about patient care.

Each episode combines real patient scenarios, practical clinical reasoning, and evidence-informed integrative medicine to help you organize complexity, recognize patterns, and make confident clinical decisions.

Rather than memorizing protocols or chasing the latest trends, you'll learn the thinking frameworks behind integrative practice. We'll explore hormones, metabolic health, obesity medicine, thyroid physiology, gut health, longevity, laboratory interpretation, lifestyle medicine, and the everyday clinical decisions that help patients feel better and live healthier lives.

Whether you're just beginning your journey into integrative medicine or you're already incorporating it into practice, this podcast will help you strengthen your clinical reasoning, ask better questions, and care for patients with greater confidence.

Dr. Sheri Erwin, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, a Doctor of Nursing Practice, board-certified family nurse practitioner, specialty-trained functional and integrative medicine clinician, educator, and founder of BridgeWell Integrative Education, hosts the podcast.

Because becoming an integrative clinician isn't about learning more protocols. It's about learning how to think.

  • BridgeWell Brief #8: Do You Need Your Own Practice to Practice Integratively?
    20 Oct 2026

Do you need to open your own practice to practice integratively?

For many nurse practitioners, moving into functional and integrative medicine feels tied to a much bigger step: leaving their job and opening a private practice. But those are two separate decisions.

In this BridgeWell Brief, Dr. Sheri Erwin challenges the assumption that becoming an integrative NP requires owning a cash-pay functional medicine practice.

Your current environment may have real limitations. You may have short visits, productivity requirements, formulary restrictions, or limited access to specialty testing. Integrative practice doesn't mean ignoring those boundaries. It means asking what you can do within them to better understand and manage the patient in front of you.

In this episode, you'll hear why clinical reasoning is the part of integrative practice nobody can take away from you, whether you work in primary care, women's health, obesity medicine, specialty care, telehealth, or eventually decide to build your own practice.

You'll also be challenged to ask a different question this week:

What is one thing I could do differently with my next patient as I learn to think integratively?

You don't have to wait for the perfect job or the perfect practice to start becoming the clinician you want to be.

You don't need to own the practice to own your clinical reasoning.

  • Beyond the “Adrenal Fatigue” Label
    15 Oct 2026

A patient looks you in the eye and says, “I think my adrenals are shot.”

Do you order a cortisol panel? Recommend an adrenal supplement? Focus on stress? Or step back and ask what else could be driving the fatigue?

In this episode, I walk through Elena's case: a 43-year-old experiencing exhaustion on waking, an afternoon crash, wired nights, weight gain, irritability, changing menstrual cycles, and workouts that now leave her depleted. Her symptoms may sound like “adrenal fatigue,” but that label does not explain why her health changed or tell us what to do next.

We build her clinical timeline and examine the interaction among chronic stress, circadian disruption, inconsistent nutrition, increasing caffeine and alcohol use, reduced exercise recovery, metabolic dysfunction, thyroid physiology, iron status, sleep disorders, and the menopausal transition.

Then we move into the actual clinical workup. I explain:

    • Which foundational, thyroid, metabolic, nutritional, and hormone tests I would order
    • Why free T3, thyroid antibodies, fasting insulin, comprehensive iron studies, and other selected markers may belong in the evaluation
    • How I assess perimenopause without relying on a single fluctuating hormone level
    • How I screen for obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs, and other sleep-related contributors
    • How an adrenal-insufficiency evaluation differs from functional HPA-axis assessment
    • When a diurnal salivary cortisol profile may be useful
    • How the cortisol pattern can change nutrition, circadian, stress-regulation, exercise, botanical, and nutraceutical decisions
    • How I sequence care without overwhelming the patient with testing and supplements

This is not an adrenal-fatigue protocol. It is a practical example of how an integrative nurse practitioner moves from symptoms and systems relationships to targeted testing, individualized treatment, and measurable follow-up.

If you are learning functional and integrative medicine but still wonder how to put all the pieces together when a real patient sits down in front of you, this episode is for you.

Listen, subscribe, and share the episode with a colleague. Then tell me: what patient label would you like to become more confident unpacking?

  • BridgeWell Brief #7: You Took the Integrative Medicine Courses. Now What?
    6 Oct 2026

You took the courses. You learned about hormones, gut health, insulin resistance, cortisol, nutrient deficiencies, supplements, and specialty testing. Maybe you even earned a certification.

Then a complex patient sits down in front of you and suddenly the question becomes: Where do I even start?

In this BridgeWell Brief, Dr. Sheri Erwin explores the gap between learning integrative medicine and actually practicing it. More knowledge gives you more possibilities, but without a clinical reasoning framework, more options can actually make patient care harder.

You'll learn why integrative practice isn't about finding the right protocol, supplement list, or specialty test. It's about organizing complexity, identifying what matters most, recognizing what you cannot afford to miss, determining the primary drivers, and sequencing care appropriately.

Dr. Erwin also introduces the B.R.I.D.G.E. clinical reasoning framework and gives you five questions you can use with a complex patient this week.

Because becoming an integrative clinician isn't about knowing everything.

It's about learning how to choose the right tool for the right patient at the right time.
