The Honest Middle is a raw, personal podcast about mental health, anxiety, depression, medication, recovery, family, work, fear, hope, and the parts of real life we usually keep hidden.

Hosted by John Knopick, this is not advice from a therapist or an expert standing safely on the other side. It is an honest conversation from inside the struggle—where progress is real, setbacks still happen, answers are incomplete, and none of us has everything figured out.

Each episode explores what it feels like to live through difficult days, question your own progress, search for normalcy, and keep moving even when life does not offer a clean ending. Some episodes may be heavy. Others may be hopeful, funny, reflective, or simply about what it means to be human.

The goal is simple: to help people feel less alone, encourage honest conversation, and build a community where nobody has to pretend they are fine.

Welcome to The Honest Middle—real conversations from the part of life we are still figuring out.

  • Sometimes "I Don't Know" Is the Most Honest Answer
    16 Oct 2026

Sometimes “I don’t know” is the most honest answer you have.

Life throws something at you, your brain wants an answer immediately, and somehow you still have to get through your day.

This week on The Honest Middle, I’m talking about that uncomfortable space before you know what comes next. Gathering information. Talking to people you trust. Setting boundaries. Giving yourself enough room to make a thoughtful decision instead of just the fastest one.

Episode 13: Sometimes “I Don’t Know” Is the Most Honest Answer

  • How Do You Rebuild Trust When You're Still Hurting
    10 Oct 2026

What happens when the trust you have in someone you love gets shaken?

In Episode 12 of The Honest Middle, I'm getting real about one of the hardest things I've ever had to work through: rebuilding trust while you're still hurting. Your heart wants to move forward, but your brain keeps looking backward, scanning for patterns and turning ordinary moments into red flags. I talk about why loving someone and trusting someone aren't always the same thing, what rebuilding actually takes (time, accountability, consistency, transparency, and sometimes counseling), and why it can't be done by one person alone. Maybe it doesn't mean repairing the house exactly the way it was. Maybe it means renovating it into something stronger.

I don't have all the answers, and that's exactly why this podcast exists. Have you ever had your trust shaken by someone you loved? Did you rebuild it, and what actually helped? Tell me in the comments.

  • No is a Complete Sentence
    2 Oct 2026

Have you ever played the part someone handed you, and forgotten who you were underneath it?

For me, this one hit close to home. Ellen Lubensky is an attorney, a mental health advocate, and the founder of the Mental Health Choice Project. In this conversation she gets honest about playing the role everyone expected, learning that "no" is a complete sentence, what it's like to feel "perfect in every way" on the outside, and her own path with mental health care and medication. It's raw, it's real, and I'm really glad she trusted us with it.

⚠️ This episode contains topics that may be sensitive for some listeners. Ellen shares her own story and opinions. No medical advice is given here, so please don't stop or change any medication without talking to your doctor first.

💛 If you're struggling, you're not alone. In the U.S., call or text 988 to talk with someone.

If it landed with you, tell me in the comments: what part did you play for someone else?
