    3 Nov 2026

Why We Act Indifferent to What Matters Most

    “I don't care.”

    “Whatever.”

    “It's fine.”

How many times have you said those words when the truth was something entirely different?

As men, we want to be respected, appreciated, included, desired, and loved. We want our efforts to be recognized, our friendships to matter, and our presence to be wanted.

Yet somewhere along the way, many of us learned to pretend those things don't matter.

We brush off compliments. We hide disappointment. We act like rejection doesn't hurt. We let friendships fade without admitting we miss them. And when someone hurts us, we often respond with anger, withdrawal, or indifference rather than admitting how we actually feel.

Sometimes “I don't care” really means “I don't want you to know how much I care.”

In Episode 14 of The Grounded Man Project, Mike and Justin explore the things men pretend not to care about, why emotional honesty can feel so uncomfortable, and how the walls we build to protect ourselves can disconnect us from the people and relationships that matter most.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Why men pretend not to care about appearance, recognition, compliments, and being included.
    • How anger and withdrawal can disguise disappointment, rejection, and emotional pain.
    • Why being needed isn't the same as being wanted.
    • How measuring our worth by our usefulness can leave us feeling lonely.
    • Why one genuine compliment can stay with a man for the rest of his life.
    • The friendships we miss but struggle to reach out and reconnect with.
    • How emotional walls can turn self-protection into self-sabotage.
    • Why expressing what matters to us doesn't make us weak or give away our power.
    • How to communicate our feelings honestly without trying to control someone else's response.

Mike shares the story of a stranger at the gym whose simple compliment became a lifelong memory during one of the most difficult periods of his life. Mike and Justin also reflect on their own friendship, the years they drifted apart, and what brought them back together.

This week's challenge: The 7-Day Honesty Challenge

For the next seven days, pay attention to the moments when you say:

    “I'm fine.”

    “Whatever.”

    “It doesn't matter.”

    “I don't care.”

When you catch yourself, stop and ask three questions:

    1. What am I pretending doesn't matter to me?
    2. What am I afraid would happen if I admitted it mattered?
    3. What would it look like to express how I feel honestly, without trying to control the response?

Start small. Practice replacing indifference with honesty.

Instead of “It's no big deal,” try “I was disappointed.”

Instead of “We've both been busy,” try “I miss spending time with you.”

Instead of “I'm fine,” try “I could use some reassurance right now.”

Write down what you notice, what you feel, and what changes when you start telling the truth.

The challenge isn't to change someone else's response. It's to stop hiding what matters to you.

Because the goal isn't to become a man who doesn't care.

It's to become a man who's secure enough to admit what he truly cares about.

You can be strong and still be hurt. You can be independent and still want connection. You can be grounded and still need love, appreciation, and reassurance.

None of those things make you less of a man.

Episode 13: What If Nothing Is Wrong?

Why Some Men Don't Know How to Live Without a Problem to Solve

What happens when life finally gets quiet, but you can't seem to enjoy it?

The bills are paid. Work is going well. Nobody needs rescuing. There's no crisis to manage, no emergency to handle, and nothing that absolutely needs fixing.

So why do you feel like you should be doing something?

For some men, being the problem solver becomes more than a responsibility. It becomes an identity. We're the dependable ones. The fixers. The guys everyone calls when something goes wrong.

And somewhere along the way, we start measuring our worth by how much we're needed.

Some men aren't addicted to chaos. They're addicted to who they get to be inside of it.

In Episode 13 of The Grounded Man Project, Mike and Justin explore why peace can feel uncomfortable, how productivity becomes a form of avoidance, and what happens when we confuse being needed with being valuable.

    We discuss:

    • Why some men feel restless or guilty when they have nothing to do.
    • How constantly fixing problems can become part of our identity.
    • The difference between meaningful ambition and manufactured urgency.
    • Why saying yes to everyone else often means saying no to ourselves.
    • How being dependable can quietly turn into burnout, resentment, and neglected relationships.
    • Why being present sometimes matters more than being productive.
    • How to recognize when we're creating problems simply because we don't know how to sit still.

This week's challenge: For seven days, catch yourself creating unnecessary urgency. Before jumping into another problem, ask yourself:

    1. Is this actually urgent?
    2. Is this mine to solve?
    3. What happens if I do nothing?

Each day, leave one nonessential thing unfinished and use that time to be present instead.

Because being grounded isn't just about knowing how to handle chaos.

It's about learning how to live without it.

You don't have to solve a problem to deserve a peaceful day. And you don't have to be needed to be valuable.

  • Episode 12: You Are Allowed To Change Your Mind
    20 Oct 2026
Episode 12: You're Allowed to Change Your Mind

When does perseverance become stubbornness? And what happens when the life you've been building is no longer the life you want?

As men, we're taught to push through, honor our commitments, and never quit. We build careers, relationships, goals, and entire identities around the decisions we've made. But somewhere along the way, we can become so committed to the man we thought we needed to be that we lose sight of the man we're becoming.

In Episode 12 of The Grounded Man Project, Mike and Justin explore the uncomfortable reality of changing your mind.

From redefining success and questioning old ambitions to navigating relationships, responsibilities, and the pressure to always be the provider or fixer, this conversation challenges what it really means to stay committed to yourself.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • The difference between perseverance and stubbornness.
    • Why changing your mind can feel like admitting defeat.
    • How our definitions of success evolve as we grow.
    • The identities men build around being providers, fixers, and problem-solvers.
    • Knowing when to keep fighting and when to reconsider your direction.
    • Why personal growth doesn't excuse abandoning your responsibilities.
    • What it actually means to be grounded without being immovable.

We also leave you with four questions to examine a belief, goal, decision, or identity you may have outgrown.

"You don't owe every past version of yourself the future he imagined. You owe the man you are today an honest look at whether that future still fits."

Changing your mind doesn't always mean you're growing. And refusing to change doesn't always mean you're strong.

Sometimes the hardest thing a man can do is admit that what he once wanted isn't what he wants anymore.

Being grounded doesn't mean being immovable.
