Sustainability is everywhere - but how much of what we hear reflects the complete picture?

The Green Reality, presented by KAVALAN, is an evidence-led podcast that looks beyond environmental slogans, selective statistics and marketing claims to examine the realities behind sustainability.

Hosted by Jack Gocher and KAVALAN Senior Researcher Mark Chen - the series’ resident “numbers guy” - each episode explores the data behind some of today’s most important environmental questions. From carbon emissions, global warming and net zero to life cycle assessment, toxic pollution, plastics, waste and geopolitics, the conversation asks not simply what sounds sustainable, but what the evidence actually tells us.

No environmental decision exists in isolation. Reducing one impact can sometimes shift the burden elsewhere, while a promising solution may bring unintended consequences for natural resources, human health, economic stability or society. Understanding genuine progress therefore requires context, transparency and consideration of the complete life cycle.

The Green Reality is not about easy answers or perfect solutions. It is about asking better questions, examining the right numbers and understanding the difficult trade-offs behind the choices we make.

This is where sustainability meets reality - and where balance is everything.

  • How Do You Measure a Product’s True Impact? | The Green Reality EP6
    20 Oct 2026

How can a business prove the environmental impact of its product?

In Episode 6 of The Green Reality, Jack Gocher and KAVALAN Senior Researcher Mark Chen explain how a Life Cycle Assessment turns raw materials, manufacturing, energy, transportation and disposal into measurable environmental data.

They explore the principles behind ISO-standardised LCA, including functional units, system boundaries, inventory data and impact categories. They also examine the different roles played by LCA software, specialist consultants and independent third-party verification.

Because meaningful environmental assessment is not about feeling green. It is about defining what was measured, showing the methodology and following the evidence across the product’s life cycle.

  • The Great Net Zero Dilemma | The Green Reality Ep.5
    13 Oct 2026

Net zero has become one of the world’s biggest promises. But do we have a credible plan to deliver it?

In Episode 5 of The Green Reality, Jack Gocher and KAVALAN Senior Researcher Mark Chen examine the gap between climate commitments and current policy.

From hard-to-decarbonise industries and rising energy demand to critical minerals, climate finance, geopolitics and natural feedback systems, they explore why reaching net zero requires much more than replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy.

They also ask what would happen if humanity stopped producing emissions tomorrow - and why the effects of the carbon already released would not simply disappear.

Net zero is not a slogan or a single technological solution. It is a global transformation with environmental, industrial, financial and human consequences.

  • Is Carbon Really the Enemy? | The Green Reality EP.4
    6 Oct 2026

Carbon is essential to life - but human activity has disrupted its natural balance.

In Episode 4 of The Green Reality, Jack Gocher and KAVALAN Senior Researcher Mark Chen explore how carbon moves through the atmosphere, oceans, rocks, soil and living organisms - and what happens when carbon stored underground for millions of years is released too quickly.

They examine the remaining carbon budget, the effects of increasing atmospheric CO₂ and the need to balance two different responses: reducing new emissions and removing some of the carbon already in the atmosphere.

Because carbon itself is not the enemy. The problem is the scale and speed at which we have disturbed the cycle.
