Sustainability is everywhere - but how much of what we hear reflects the complete picture?

The Green Reality, presented by KAVALAN, is an evidence-led podcast that looks beyond environmental slogans, selective statistics and marketing claims to examine the realities behind sustainability.

Hosted by Jack Gocher and KAVALAN Senior Researcher Mark Chen - the series’ resident “numbers guy” - each episode explores the data behind some of today’s most important environmental questions. From carbon emissions, global warming and net zero to life cycle assessment, toxic pollution, plastics, waste and geopolitics, the conversation asks not simply what sounds sustainable, but what the evidence actually tells us.

No environmental decision exists in isolation. Reducing one impact can sometimes shift the burden elsewhere, while a promising solution may bring unintended consequences for natural resources, human health, economic stability or society. Understanding genuine progress therefore requires context, transparency and consideration of the complete life cycle.

The Green Reality is not about easy answers or perfect solutions. It is about asking better questions, examining the right numbers and understanding the difficult trade-offs behind the choices we make.

This is where sustainability meets reality - and where balance is everything.

  • Is Carbon Really the Enemy? | The Green Reality EP.4
    6 Oct 2026

Carbon is essential to life - but human activity has disrupted its natural balance.

In Episode 4 of The Green Reality, Jack Gocher and KAVALAN Senior Researcher Mark Chen explore how carbon moves through the atmosphere, oceans, rocks, soil and living organisms - and what happens when carbon stored underground for millions of years is released too quickly.

They examine the remaining carbon budget, the effects of increasing atmospheric CO₂ and the need to balance two different responses: reducing new emissions and removing some of the carbon already in the atmosphere.

Because carbon itself is not the enemy. The problem is the scale and speed at which we have disturbed the cycle.

  • Can You Prove It’s Sustainable? | The Green Reality EP.3
    29 Sep 2026

A product may claim to be green - but can that claim be proven?

In Episode 3 of The Green Reality, Jack Gocher and KAVALAN Senior Researcher Mark Chen examine the data behind sustainability marketing. Using everyday examples including coffee, clothing and electric vehicles, they explore how carbon emissions, water consumption, pollution and other impacts accumulate throughout a product's life cycle. They also explain the purpose of life cycle assessment and why Scope 3 emissions are often the hardest impacts for businesses to measure.

Because a percentage without context can be misleading, and a claim without evidence is only a claim.

Without the numbers, green is just a colour.

  • Can We Fix One Crisis Without Creating Another? | The Green Reality EP.2
    22 Sep 2026

The world’s greatest threats do not exist in isolation. Conflict, financial instability, environmental damage, resource scarcity and social division are all part of one interconnected system.

In Episode 2 of The Green Reality, Jack Gocher and KAVALAN Senior Researcher Mark Chen explore the difficult relationships between these five pressures - from the minerals required for cleaner technologies to the energy and water consumed by artificial intelligence.

They also examine why greenwashing and limited supply-chain transparency make it harder to distinguish genuine progress from solutions that simply move the damage somewhere else.

Because we cannot fix one crisis by creating another.
