  • Why Pressure Changes How You Think, Feel, and Respond
    28 Oct 2026

Have you ever reacted to a situation and immediately wished you had handled it differently?

Maybe you spoke too quickly, got defensive, agreed to something you couldn't carry, or withdrew from a conversation you needed to have.

Why does pressure sometimes change the way we think, feel, and respond—even when we know better?

Welcome to Season 2 of The Formation Practice, where we explore what happens to our personal growth, self-awareness, and leadership when life gets demanding.

In this episode, Dr. Ella Thompson examines how stress, expectations, and competing responsibilities influence our emotions, decisions, and everyday behavior.

Through a warm, thought-provoking conversation, we explore:

    • Why pressure changes our responses: How stress and mental overload can affect our patience, attention, and decision-making.
    • What pressure reveals about our habits: Recognizing patterns such as people-pleasing, defensiveness, withdrawal, and the need for control.
    • The difference between reacting and responding: How emotional awareness helps us make more intentional choices.
    • How to become steadier under pressure: Understanding our limitations, managing expectations, and recognizing when something needs to change.

This conversation isn't about becoming someone who never feels frustrated, overwhelmed, or uncertain. It's about recognizing what's happening within us before those feelings start directing our decisions.

    This week's Formation Practice:

When you find yourself under pressure, ask yourself three questions:

    1. What am I feeling right now?
    2. What is this pressure making me want to do?
    3. What response would best reflect the person I'm trying to become?

Whether you're navigating workplace stress, leadership challenges, family responsibilities, difficult relationships, or personal change, this episode offers practical insights into emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and intentional living.

The goal of formation isn't to become someone who never feels pressure. It's to become someone who recognizes what pressure is doing before it decides what happens next.

    Keep growing. Keep becoming.

  • What Formed Authority Sounds Like
    20 Oct 2026

Having the authority to make a decision doesn't always mean we have the wisdom to make it well.

What does responsible leadership actually sound like? How do self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and personal growth shape how we influence others?

In Episode 12 of The Formation Practice, Dr. Ella Thompson explores how leadership formation, character, and the responsible use of authority connect.

Building on earlier conversations about personal growth, self-governance, boundaries, and the responsibilities we carry, this episode turns our attention outward. The evidence of our inner formation eventually shows up in how we communicate, make decisions, treat others, and recognize when it's time to let go.

Together, we explore three expressions of formed authority:

    • How it speaks: Communicating with clarity, humility, confidence, and discernment without needing to dominate or diminish others.
    • What it chooses not to do: Understanding that having power does not justify every demand, and recognizing that compliance is not always consent.
    • How it lets go: Learning the difference between responsible stewardship and control, while preparing others to carry responsibility with confidence.

This conversation invites us to reconsider what makes a leader trustworthy. Leadership is not simply about holding a title, making decisions, or exercising influence. It's also about the character, judgment, and self-awareness we develop as we carry responsibility.

This week's formation practice: Take a few minutes each day to reflect on where you exercised authority, what guided your decisions, and whether your actions honored the people and responsibilities entrusted to you.

Whether you lead an organization, serve your community, guide a family, or want to become more intentional about how you influence others, this conversation offers practical insights into ethical leadership, personal development, and the ongoing work of becoming.

Because the question is not simply whether we have authority.

The question is what kind of person we are becoming as we exercise it.

  • The Story So Far: Formation, Authority, and the Journey Inward
    9 Oct 2026

If you are joining The Formation Practice, this episode is the perfect place to start. And if you have been here from the beginning, this one is a gift — a chance to pause, look back, and see how far the conversation has come. In this episode, Dr. Ella Thompson walks through the arc of the first ten episodes in plain, accessible language by defining formation, performance, interior life, exterior life, ungoverned strength, governed strength, and formed authority in terms that any leader can understand and immediately apply, regardless of where they are in their leadership journey. This is not a recap for review. It is a formation conversation in its own right — one that takes complex ideas and makes them simple, because the best formation teaching does not ask you to work to understand it. It asks you to recognize yourself in it. Whether you are an emerging leader or a seasoned executive, this episode gives you the language, the framework, and the invitation to go deeper.
