The tragedy began with a rushed approach. Hoping to land sooner on a different runway, the crew attempted to reprogram the aircraft’s flight management system. But a misunderstanding of the navigation system caused the aircraft to turn toward the wrong waypoint, sending it directly toward the surrounding mountains.
In the darkness, the pilots gradually lost situational awareness. Despite the aircraft’s advanced technology and warnings of rising terrain, the crew struggled to understand where they were and where the aircraft was heading. During the final attempt to climb away from the mountain, the aircraft’s speed brakes remained deployed, further reducing its ability to escape the terrain.
The crash became a devastating example of controlled flight into terrain—a disaster in which a perfectly capable aircraft is flown into the ground because the crew has lost awareness of its position and surroundings.
Flight 965 remains a haunting reminder that sophisticated technology cannot replace fundamental piloting skills, clear communication, and constant situational awareness. A chain of small misunderstandings, made under pressure and in darkness, ultimately led an experienced crew and 163 passengers toward a mountain they never saw coming.
