Thursday, May 29th: In Episode 519 of The Daily Grind, we meet Dhuoda, a noblewoman and mother living in the turmoil of 9th-century Carolingian France. When her teenage son was taken from her and sent to the royal court as a political hostage, Dhuoda was left alone, powerless, and uncertain of his future. But rather than retreat into silence, she wrote.

Her work, the Liber Manualis—“The Little Handbook”—is a one-of-a-kind treasure: the only known Latin book written by a woman during the Carolingian period. It’s not just a book of advice. It’s a survival guide for a young man growing up in a world of corruption, ambition, and violence. And it’s a prayer—a long, aching plea for her son to walk with Christ when she could no longer walk beside him.

In this episode, we explore Dhuoda’s extraordinary wisdom, her love for Scripture, and her deep theological insight. We hear her motherly voice in timeless words like:

“May God be the guard of your soul and your body. May He guide your heart to Him, so that you may not go the way of those who are proud, but be a friend to humility.”

And again:

“My dear son, the more I love you, the more I am afflicted with anxiety for you… But I place my hope in the Lord, and I commend you to Him day and night.”

She teaches William how to read the Psalms, how to confess his sins, how to think about power, and how to fear God above men:

“If you fear man more than God, you will be easily bent and break like a reed in the wind. But if you hold God in reverence first, He will make you firm as an oak.”

Dhuoda’s Manual covers faith, ethics, courtly behavior, and even arithmetic—offering everything she could think to give her son from a distance.

Her words were never meant for fame. She never expected to be remembered. But more than a thousand years later, we still hear her quiet voice whispering through the shadows of a broken world: Be faithful. Be wise. Stay near to Christ.
